The Motherfucking 2021 Season Thread

It's the Gallagher comp you gotta worry about.

Yeah. I wonder if 8/40 would get it done. Gallagher was 6/39. They're functionally the same fucking contract. Front load it as much as possible, signing bonus as much as possible. Whenever he gets old and wants to retire, put in the paperwork on July 2 of that year.

the other thing is if you look back over the years at terrible UFA deals handed out on July 1, most of them are to Hyman type players. his physical-truculensity is highly, highly valued.

but I think the consensus seems to be we can only keep him if he takes a discount, and I would agree with that position. and despite all the shade I've thrown his way previously, I really hope we're able to keep the guy. gotta support the tribe members.

I mean we know on any 8 year deal we likely come out behind in the final four years, if not longer. just can't justify it unless it is a real discount in my books.

I think I would do 8/36, front-loaded (or mid-loaded due to high escrow payments for the next couple of years?)

With a flat cap and 2/3rds of the league currently in LTIR space this season already?

Maybe, but that's a lot of money for a 29 yr old with career highs of 21 G, 41 pts.
Hey I didn't say it would be a good move. All it takes is one team and one bidding war.

That's not how this works at all.

Past performance and prevailing performance trends are easily the best indicators of future performance. A goalie who has put up a steady .910-.915 over his last 20, 50, & 100 games is really, really likely to give you .910-.915 over his next 50. A goalie who is trending the wrong way over his last 20 (.900), 50 (.905), & 100 (.910) is really likely to continue trending downward, or at best maintain current performance levels. There's a pretty significant gap in performance between Fred and any of the goalies I mentioned, and no, Fred isn't likely to perform better than any of them from here on in.
Pretty sure we're on the same page about getting someone good to replace him. But no, not someone who is at .905 or something this year. I'd rather just roll the dice on Andersen and see if he can just provide average goaltending.

Even though he's great that's pretty close to walk territory.
That's past walk territory if we're talking about an 8 year deal. There's no scenario where Zach Hyman being the player with the longest term contract on our books makes sense. He should get a 4-5 year deal, and $4M-$5M per.

I think he gets 6+ on the open market tbh.
He would, but too bad there isn't another Toronto team out there for him.

He won't want to leave. They should just stick to their guns and call his bluff. Hyman isn't going to fucking Vegas or Jersey if the Leafs are an option.

Yeah, and I'm down for that, and would consider it an upgrade. As long as the guy doesn't cost much to acquire and doesn't come with term. These have been my key points throughout. And in a normal year I wouldn't do it at all, but Freddy has been completely broken this year.

Feb 6 to Mar 3 this season he had a stretch of 7 quality starts, 7 wins in 8 starts.
