The New Division

Insanely stupid...Bill Buckner went 6 for 32 in that world series, with an OPS of .400

Not only did he really, really suck in the playoffs for Boston, he blew the biggest moment of the series for them. ****, without him being abysmal through the entire playoffs, maybe they out the Mets in 5.

Nailed it.

Some predictions within the division:

Lebrun: Leafs (4th), Habs (4th), Sens (1st)
Burnside: Leafs (4th), Habs (5th), Sens (2nd)
Custance: Leafs (6th), Habs (4th), Sens (1st)
Melrose: Leafs (4th), Habs (5th), Sens (3rd)
Strang: Leafs (5th), Habs (4th), Sens (3rd)

The Habs and Leafs are being underrated, Wings and Sens being overrated. Remember, both the Wings and Sens finished behind the Leafs and Habs last year.

A lot of Red Wings worship as well.

Looking at the predictions this offseason, most have Boston #1, Sens/Wings at #2/#3 and Leafs/Habs at #4/#5.

But when I look at the overall rosters, I'd take the Leafs/Habs over the Wings/Sens. And it's far from a lock that Boston wins the division. But it's tight. 5 or 6 teams won't be seperated by much.

Yup. They should all be separated by as few as eight to ten points.

boston's interesting - a rebound year from Iginla could make them pretty dang scary. he's not THAT old.

Iginla and Eriksson might not only be better than Horton and Seguin...they could be a LOT better than them.

36, so he still has some gas left in the tank.

But it depends on whether you think of him as a skill guy or as a power forward. The former tend to age much more effectively than the latter and yet he profiles as somewhat of a hybrid combination.

I mean the guy had to have a bit of a tough time getting it up for that sadsack team he was on. Should be easier on Boston.

then again, he looked really fricken old in pittsburgh, so I dunno.

6th, Custance? He has every single one of Detroit, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, and one of Buffalo/Tampa/Florida are ahead of us? Come on.

There's just no damn good reason to have us 6th, IMO. I'm not even sure a Sens/Habs fan would say that.

Remember in the Quinn years where we were always picked to miss the playoffs? It's like the media are obliged to slot us in far below where makes sense.

The Leafs and Habs will both finish ahead of Ottawa again this year.

I have concerns about the habs.

Will Markov stay healthy again?
Will we get as many PP chances again? (looking at how the division last year had the most penalties)
Was the end of the year nose dive the other teams figuring us out (or luck ended, etc) or what it just a slump at the worst time?
Which can be balanced with Price not being terrible.

Of course... the biggest concern I have of any of the 3 teams is...can Ottawa's goaltending do it again?
Can they stay healthy? If they do can it make up for the goaltending going make to regularish numbers?

For the leafs - do all these advanced stats mean something ?

Of course the Sochi break and obviously the new division should play a massive role in the season.

Weird things happen but ya that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Neither does Lebrun.

I think the sens, habs, leafs, bruins, wings, sens are the top 5...any can win the division...with tampa being a wildcard and the sabres/panthers being a big step back of the rest.

edit: forgot the sens

Weird things happen, sure, I just can't think of any logical argument behind that prediction, that's all.

If TB gets goaltending, they are a serious threat. They can score goals and Hedman is a stud.

If one or more of the playoff teams from last year has to deal with injuries or they get inconsistent goaltending, they could easily slide down.

All fair concerns, but even if you take a substantial step backwards in all of the aforementioned areas you should be getting substantially better goaltending than Price gave you last season.

Even if he's only a league-average type starter (.915 or so) that would be a huge improvement on the .905 mark he recorded last season.

Hoping the new goalie coach helps.
