The New Division

You tell me. Where were your guns against Philly or the Devils, or Carolina.

Carolina.

It's hockey. Shit happens. We couldn't beat you for a variety of reasons, you couldn't beat Philly, and Philly couldn't beat us.

The Leafs were playing the St. John's Maple Leafs roster against Carolina due to a ridiculous swathe of injuries. The Hurricanes were playing at full strength and using interference and obstruction to great advantage.

And we beat Philly in 1999 and lost in six and seven games to them. We could beat Philly.

I'm aware of the numbers.

Ottawa's offence was completely shut down that series, but they failed to apply any significant pressure at any point in 2001.

The Leafs defensive forwards in particular were shining lights of that sweep.

Against Dallas in 1996-97 Joseph was positively super-human, getting a team that nobody thought even in the same stratosphere as the powerhouse Stars past them in convincing fashion.

ok, 14 years ago you could beat Philly.

Sundin and Tucker were both back in the Carolina series. Jeff Farkas, FTW! Nathan Dempsey for Norris!

What actually happened is that Quinn rolled 3 lines and you ran out of gas, but you can play the St. John's Leafs angle if it makes you feel better.

Check their ice times if you want.

Yes, a banged up Sundin with a wrist issue and Tucker coming off of a separated shoulder. You could tell they weren't even close to being at full effectiveness, but play that card if you want.

I'm more irritated that hockey fans everywhere were deprived of an Original Six classic between two legendary rivals more than anything.

Joseph stopped 37 and 36 shots to record back to back shut outs in games one and two. The Sens generated tons of chances and Joseph stood on his head.

Your theory is full of holes.

Heh.

You can stick to your SOG love-in all you want. I remember that series perfectly and they were primarily low-percentage, perimeter shots of minimal consequence.

The announcers frequently commented on Ottawa's total lack of offensive opportunities throughout the series.

And ultimately, for what it's worth, if Ottawa had the stellar prospect depth that you all so frequently laud on this, a Leafs forum, for Leafs fans, then you should take responsibility for the fact that your inept management team, lacking in conviction and in killer-instinct, saw fit to never once acquire a money goaltender beyond a washed-up Tom Barrasso right before retirement.

If you had made the move to acquire a goaltender of consequence, then perhaps the four series losses might have been mitigated somewhat. Alas, we shall never know.

The Leaf homers on CBC...sure thing sparky.

You are now resorting to your "perfect" memory vs empirical evidence. Case closed.

The empirical evidence from that series, which was frequently presented on the televised graphics, showed that Ottawa had minimal opportunities within twenty feet of the goal.

Why could that be? Why was there such a minimal slot presence? Mmmmm.

Feel free to post this evidence...

They had no money, and our scouts, as amazing as they were at picking offensive players, sucked rocks at picking goaltenders.

That's a fair criticism, but the Leafs were a team of infinite resources, and the Senators were flat broke, and I have no qualms even saying that the broke jokers that brought the team to Ottawa never should have been given a franchise.

It's actually pretty amazing what they were able to accomplish given their circumstances.

You're not presenting evidence. You simply posted a group of numbers that all of us were already aware of and trying to draw some sort of related inference from it that doesn't exist.

We know Ottawa was dominated in the 2001 series. What's your point?

I still have no clue why you traded Tugnutt when he was coming off of the best season by a goalie in your franchise's brief tenure.

St John's Leafs:

Jeff Farkas:

1 Game vs Ottawa. 2 shifts, TOI - 1:53
1 Game vs Carolina. 2 shifts, TOI - 1:14

Bob Wren:

1 Game vs Ottawa. 12 shifts, TOI - 9:09

Paul Healey:

Game 1 vs Ottawa: 15 shifts, TOI - 10:52 - Loss
Game 2 vs Ottawa: 11 shifts, TOI - 8:22 - Win

Not going to go through all the games, but basically when he played more than 4 minutes, you lost.

The "St. John's Leafs" thing is a nice insult to throw around, but it's not really how it went down.

Combined team points in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004:

Toronto: 393 (98.25 points/season)
Ottawa: 400 (100 points/season)

The two teams were almost identical points-wise.

and the sens only had the edge in points thanks to the Leafs using horrendous backup goalies.

That series was ****ing awesome. I fully expected the Leafs to get thumped due to injuries..Alyn McCauley our #1 centre? Get the **** outta here.

Then Maximus happened.
