The New Division

Then the same guy makes him look foolish a few years later.

Yeah he couldn't have been very good if some jobber made him look that bad...twice, and one when said jobber was 18.

Mario...Lemiuex you say? He wasn't any good, was he?

Something like that. The guy only played like 800 NHL games... decent for a plumber.

The funny thing is I was going to mention the Lemieux play in my post. He made everyone look bad.

That second one is just pure brilliance. It's the kind of cerebral play that I'm not sure many if any other player ever would even think to attempt before seeing him do it.

Like this one of course.

I spent an evening having dinner with a guy in hockey Canada. We spent quite a while talking about players and the selection process and talent levels, it was awesome. Two guys he raved about were guy lafleur, and Mario. In particular, he talked about that through the legs at the Olympics play. He said it was probably one of the most special, off the charts plays in history in terms of showing how talented a player was, and how for the garden variety hockey fan, it was hard to appreciate just how special that play was. For him to have the vision and presence of mind to see that play was just otherworldly good. And as a game winning goal for a gold medal too.

Fooled everyone on the ice. Richter was helpless on that one.

I suppose Kariya deserves some credit for actually being there. I guess he was the only one not fooled by Mario.

that play is overrated. just a dummy. classic soccer move.

heck, checking that replay, he even ruins the dummy by following the puck across with his stick as if he was passing it to the guy anyways, giving the goalie a chance to dive and make the save.

If you think the goalie was watching his head then maybe... but I doubt that.

It's not overrated at all. It's not a classic move in hockey. I've never seen another player in hockey make that play... certainly not prior to Mario doing it.

He knew exactly what he was doing. A special, unprecedented and never seen since play by one of the top 2-3 talented players to ever put on skates.

Nonsense! The dummy is not part of the hockey culture, and this is a sport that moves 100X faster than soccer. Given the venue and the circumstances, it was audacious and brilliant.

And Richter squared up to Lemieux. He was f@cked.

This is the dumbest thing you've ever though before, nevermind said or typed. Sure, it's a standard soccer move, where the ball is huge compared to a puck and travelling a lot slower over a much larger area, with double the amount of potential targets for a pass out there. That's otherwordly hockey sense, there's a reason we've only seen a "classic soccer move" performed by the most elite talent in the history of the sport.
