The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

There is pretty good value in having a skill guy with excellent defensive chops in the middle 6. Most (maybe all?) of their skilled wingers are not great defensively. Ok I'm in.

We are very much lacking guys for our third line that can push up if injuries happen without absolutely killing offensive play.

Be nice to add him in. Cant rely on AM or JT (age) to play 75 games.

McKenna-Mattthews-Roslovic
Knies-Tavares-Nylander
Cowan-Paul-Giroux
Joshua-Sissons-Blueger
Lorentz-Duhaime

Still think they're gonna trade Joshua, but I'd like to have him as a guy that can jump up to the third line when needed, don't want any of the others on that line. A lot hinges on Paul being better this year, but the lineup looks way better if they do sign Claude. They didn't need to sign 500 4th liners but they'd be much improved obviously.

And the best part is, giroux makes that third line perfectly fine to bury on dzone starts. Sissons, bluegar, Paul, and all that other trash would get destroyed vs mcdavid. I think a Paul -Giroux combo could be just fine. Or maybe even Sissons-Giroux if Paul is cooked.

That first line looks like it would be shit defensively but their deployment will reflect that. It works I think.

Giroux has looked awesome every time we played him. I feel like he’d always put up points against us. Eye test has always liked him and so have I, so I’d be happy if we got him. Doesn’t seem like we’re his first choice though.

And I really doubt all this Roslovic on the first line just because he’s buddies with Matty. I think he’s destined to be a third line mainstay.

Well I have him there because I think it's the best fit, not because he's buddies with Matthews. They want that third line to get extreme defensive usage, so if they sign giroux it frees up Roslovic to play in the top six and give Matthews some new talent to experiment with.

My hot take is that other than Raddysh, their best addition that will add the most wins this year is the loss of Max Domi. This has been an underrated point.

I’m not convinced he’s going to be out that long. I have a bad feeling it’ll be a couple of months and then they’ll start talking about how he skated for the first time, and it’s downhill from there.

A year ago, most of you still liked Domi and would slap me with p/60 stats when I’d say he stinks. He was the same usual junk last year so I’m not sure why everyone suddenly caught on.

I felt they should trade him after his solid playoff a couple years ago. Was a good time to sell high. Too late now, but a botched surgery may have saved them.

I won’t believe he’s out for two years until I see it though. I’m expecting a return this year, and then what? Can’t trade him because nobody wants him and Sundin is probably going to advocate for him. So someone else gets bumped out, plus we have to deal with him for the next 1.5 seasons. Four year contracts for flawed players are killer, just too long. Tre should’ve given him two years at most. No good? Too bad, that’s all we’re offering.

Net Ratings /82 last year

Joshua -3.0
Laughton -3.8
Robertson -4.9
Lorentz -5.9
Blueger -6.7
Roy -6.7
Duhaime -7.3
Sissons -8.0
Domi -8.7
Paul -9.4
Jarnkrok -12.4

Unfortunately i don't think we actually significantly upgraded on even the broken much worse than usual Domi of last year.

I really thought we’d be like who the fuck is this? to every signing but when you looked at the numbers it’d make sense but the more I look at numbers the more confused I am tbh

Paul bouncing back can make that look much better, but yeah nowhere near a guarantee and wouldn't be the first time a player of his caliber and style turns into 4th line junk at his age. Lots hinging on that because I don't see anyone else they acquired to be a 3rd line threat other than the limited flawed Roslovic.
