The Search for the New GM Thread

Problem with all the assistants is we really have no idea their philosophy until they tell us.

But looking at Tampa, they built their team the same way Dubas just did. So if you are not a fan of that...

Mathieu Darche?

Prefer Botterill to Darche tbh. Darche doesn't have much of a front office resume.

Was part of the Penguins move towards accepting analytics. Director of Hockey Ops during the Pens first set of finals runs, promoted upward from there and was AGM for the back to back team.

Went to Buffalo, which we all know is cursed, but his drafting record looks pretty solid over the 3 drafts he was there. Was gone before the Eichel debacle over the surgery.

Not sure exactly how forward thinking he is, but the Penguins were an early analytics adopter while he was in the decision making group if that counts for anything.

So if the organization wants experienced.... He went and got a big boy education after leaving hockey (MBA, University of Michigan), was in the executive group for the Penguins during almost the entiry Crosby/Malkin era and has 3 years of experience in the big chair of a terrible franchise with a shit owner in a city that looks like the 3rd worst place to spend a night in Afghanistan.

Of the obvious candidates, Tulsky and Botterill are the 2 that make the most sense to me, and Botterill seeing 3 championships from the inside is a bit intriguing, not gonna lie.

I liked Dubas for the most part. Didn't agree with everything certainly but most of his philosophies, I'd be fine with more of... think two people can have similar philosophies and the execution of what that looks like can be different.

So yeah, my suggestions won't really be that dissimilar to him.

I'll be honest, it's hard for me to separate the Buffalo strench from the Buffalo products. I don't know how much to attribute to that.

I get it, Zeke had similar struggles. But ROR won a Conn Smythe and a cup after getting out, and Eichel is the #1 centre of a team in the conference finals and has 14 points in 11 playoff games. Took him a while to get healthy but it looks like he's shed the loser stink of Buffalo too.

Botterill is the AGM for Seattle as well at the moment and they're pretty okay for an expansion team, so even he's doing pretty pretty good.

Not being able to drag that dogshit franchise out of the hole it's been in since Dominek Hasek left isn't a big knock on him imo....and they gave him a whole 3 years to do it in.

We know that everyone will be throwing their hat in the ring at least.

- Elite young core
- Elite team
- great cap flexibility
- hockey mecca

Dream gig.

Yep, it's not too often that you take a job where a Stanley Cup in the 1st year isn't a crazy thought, but at the same time you have enough flexibility to put your stamp on the club fairly quickly if you wanted to.

well yeah team zen, but 90% of the board hated his deadline.

Sure, well at least the trades on that last day... but I still think most of this board agreed with the the overarching philosophies Dubas came in with. Most people don't want to do a 180 here unless I'm misinterpreting their posts?

they’re framing it as Dubas did the 180 and turned on them.…like Shanny.
