how embarrassing for these so called 'professionals'

how so? How would you do their job differently?

While I'm often critical of sports media -- I think 90% of them are muppets (that I put on ignore), they can't force people to give them scoops...yet they still have to talk about the situation....as most listeners/readers want something they can discuss with their friends.

Imo, in some cases the phrasing is weasel-y.

If they’re guesses, make sure you say they’re guesses. Friedman said his were.

At the end of the day they're doing their job. If they were all honest and said they knew nothing they'd be fired. They are paid to generate hype even when there is little reason for hype to exist. It's hacky, it's amateurish but the current environment of a 24-7 newsfeed requires encourages them to act as they have. In other words, if you're given absolutely zero scoops, start speculating like you're on forumice otherwise they'll stop calling you if you have nothing to say.

Was it Dreger’s “involved in discussions earlier this week”?

Found that phrasing a tad strange.
No - i wish i could remember which report it was but they had confirmed that Treliving was in Toronto and had met with the leafs.

That Fox guy said that the Leafs 100% met with him this week if that counts for anything. I believe it, but I'm not sure Fox isn't just making an educated guess and phrasing it as fact.

Don’t make things up would be my starting point
