He also ran 3 drafts for chicago and landed Keith seabrook buff Crawford, plus a ton of other talent /depth

Question: do we want an overhaul of our draft and development departments or are they good?

I think they are really good and have identified a lot of legit NHL prospects. But I’d prefer they had a mandate of high end skill instead of good, smart players that can be 2nd/3rd liners.

they shouldn’t be passing on guys like Lane Hutson for Matt Stajan.

I guess that's a fair criticism they couldn't taken more swings... although quite a few guys I was iffy on on draft day eventually showed themselves to have more offensive capabilities than I expected.

Hard to complain about Sandin, Durzi, Holmberg and Knies since 2018. Looks like more to come too with Robertson, Hirvonen, Minten, Voit etc.

no stars though. A point or kucherov would be nice.

No overhaul required but yeah they tend to draft guys with 2nd line upside with regularity. Which is fine because they're nailing them at a solid clip but a home run would be nice.

Tldr: I think they're drafting has been very good, but imo shy of great.

Eh i dunno.

There's a chance both Sandin and Durzi are too fundamentally flawed to be more than support players, and Holmberg is a 24yr old AHLer at this point.

It’s hard to fairly judge their drafting given the number of picks they have dealt.

But the only guy outside of the first round whose made it as a reg so far is durzi.

There are some guys with promise but no locks.

the only guy who has high end ability is Robertson but there are some qs about how they have developed him, imo.

The degree of confidence they had when they drafted Knies made me believe their scouting staff (and maybe that includes some numbers behind the scenes) has enough of an edge to be fairly comfortable. They literally called him a steal and were all giddy when he was available to them.

Even if he doesn't work out the Robertson pick was a good swing. Durzi and Raz obviously very good, neither great. Minten was another guy that has two way second/third liner written all over him and he hasn't done anything to prove that he can't still be that in the NHL. So if they hit on him, great. But again that's a guy with a clear lack of top end upside from day 1. Hirvonen is another like that. Voit was a bigger swing, he seems decent. Those guys are tbd though.

Holmberg.. I know he's a big favorite here...but meh.

They prioritize hockey sense over skating and skill. Which kinda limits the upside but increases the odds of getting NHLers.

but the scouts have done a great job at identifying those types that become NHLers.

I don't think there's a ton of guys outside of the 2nd round after 2018 who are better than Durzi period though, at least not yet. Still fairly early there.
