The Search for the New GM Thread

They prioritize hockey sense over skating and skill. Which kinda limits the upside but increases the odds of getting NHLers.

but the scouts have done a great job at identifying those types that become NHLers.
With the caveat - again - that only 1 guy in 5 years has become an nhler

Let's make it 2. Knies is an nhler. Minten is the obvious candidate to be the 3rd but that's largely tbd. All likely support players but that would be a decent clip.

Yeah I don't have much confidence in any of those guys but Minten. Would be great if one of the others was a hit too. But even if it's just Minten that's still a decent hit rate for the amount of picks they've had over the past 4-5 years. Not great, there's room for improvement, but I would still call that "good" without looking at the rest of the leagues hit rate on guys outside of the first round.

Overall, I think it's good enough to continue with them.

I'd imagine the new GM can prioritize certain attributes more than others and certainly the development staff seems to be getting a lot out of the guys they are picking.

It’s early to judge most of these drafts. But I think 3 NHLers from 2018 is pretty solid, plus another one in Knies in the drafts since.

not the best drafting teams, but they’ve found players. And I think it’s the type of players Dubas was looking for, which IMO is the issue.

facts are facts. there's no real difference-making talent being added to the team from within. as per usual.

hence the revolving door dumpster every year trying to fill out the roster from other teams castoffs.

our crown jewel right now is Knies...and god bless the kid, but he looks to be a solid third liner that shouldn't be headlining anybody's system.

Yeah Knies sure looked like a guy that can already play on any teams top line as a 20 year old. Let's not under-sell how good he looked. He looked better than Nick Robertson has ever looked in the NHL by fucking light years and he's 1 year younger. I don't really see star player there but his upside is far higher than just a third liner.

Knies looks good but so did Poehling. Caveat the sample size.
Poehling was a shit prospect that got a hat trick in his first game and did nothing since.

Knies was a good prospect that was arguably the leafs best forward in the NHL playoffs against two of the best teams in the NHL.

Minor difference here.

wasn't meant to shit on Knies at all....solid middle sixers are a thing obviously...we keep throwing picks and assets out the door to get them, don't we??

but the question was whether changes needed to be made to the scouting/drafting personnel

Use a slew of others. Same point.

Looked really good when I saw him but also was pumped. You'll know soon enough but temper til then. He's still raw.

There's no need to undersell what Knies did. Kid looked like and produced like a quality top6 forward instantly in his first 10gms at age 20. He might fall off but he looked really good.

Durzi otoh i think people are overrating what he is at this point - he ended up a bottom pair PP specialist this year on a team that badly needed offense. The fanbase kinda hates him too.

Of course. He may go from looking like a legit top six forward, borderline first liner to a middle sixer over a full season. And that's fine. But he proved enough that he's an nhler over a small, but most difficult sample you could ask for.

My opinion never actually changed based on what I saw in the playoffs, it just came sooner than I thought it might.

Maybe not a star but a player who is almost the perfect complementary player to skilled guys.

I would say that's what I saw.
