TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

I can talk myself into it if he's the backup and there's some sort of double retention going on.

But the other guy in the tandem is pretty key.

I have a feeling the murray deal happens today.

So far what we know is:

1. Deal with buffalo was 50% retention plus 2 add ons.
2. Been speculation that "Major assets" would be needed to move Murray
3. 1 report of a 3rd team involved.

I think Murray will cost us no more than $2MM per season and we get a sweetener

It's Garrioch, so grain of salt, yadda yadda.

But he says the deal was Murray at 25% retained to move from 16th to 7th.

According to Dom's draft pick value chart - the cost of moving from 7th to 16th is the 66th pick.

This is the only circumstance under which I’d be OK with Dubas acquiring Murray.

We pick up no more than 25% of his current cap hit, and Dubas picks up another goalie that makes him the clear 1B or backup in our tandem.

Otherwise…yikes.

Don't know his methodology but it doesn't square with reality...usually those 1st round trade-down moves are the later 1st and a second, or in some cases 2 later firsts for the higher pick...I know if were the GM with #7 I'd want a better offer than 16 and 66.

the only way I can figure out to talk myself into hyping Murray is by only referring to him as "2 time Stanley Cup winning goalie Matt Murray."

How many cups does Price have? Murray = Vasy.
I mean I remember how bad he was for long stretches in Sens jersey and how we were mocking them. This is a scary goalie situation for the Leafs.

Murray was waived by a non-playoff team this year, a team desperate to unload him.

And this is who we pick as the goaltending solution?

he better be the backup.

I can see the deal making sense if we're bringing in another goalie, and squeezing Ottawa in this trade allows us to improve our cap situation and/or get a young player out of them. Maybe we can get Formenton to replace Mikheyev, for instance. Or send Kerfoot the other way for a cheaper guy that allows us to sign somebody else.

There are ways this can work for us, but man I'm really not enthusiastic about this idea.

I know it's been stated ad nauseum but how do you build a team like that without a long term goalie?

His chart is based on GVSA of that draft position historically.

I'd imagine GMs use something similar but then you're right, if you're 7th, you wouldn't just trade it for equal value you'd want them to kick in something extra so you come out on top.

For example, the Sharks traded 11th (5.7 GVSA) for the 27th + 34th (exactly 5.7 GVSA) and a 45th (1.8 GVSA) as sweetener.

That Murray deal is just on another level bad. What team would take that contract with the cash remaining?

I'm with you really.

If this is just a way of getting a backup at 1.5 to 2.3 million (double retention), and we have a better plan for the other goalie we add, it can work. Otherwise, I'm less certain about our goaltending than last year.
