TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Elliotte apparently went on a rant about how much the Leafs like Murray's nerdies and that he is easily their #1 target this offseason. Idk what nerdies they look at but fuck they're still using rando fancy nerdies to evaluate goaltending I guess.

Not all nerds are the same (otherwise teams would just follow JFresh for free)

Fun Fact: Panthers (who came first overall) analytics dept really like Ben Chiarot's nerdies.

Track record matters! If this was a forward or D I'd have more faith. Leafs ended up with Mrazek using nerdies just a year ago. I'm pretty sure they fired the guy that pushed him tho so maybe they've got fresh ideas up their sleeve.

He also mentioned that 5x5 is on the table for Jack on Wednesday and the Leafs have no appetite for that. And Kuemper is looking like Washington. And I guess tampering is legal now. He said that they believe in Murray the player more than any other option out there (for the price he'll come at), but are less sure about his health.

I'm starting to wonder whether goalies should be pure eye test and forget the numbers.

If a goalie plays on a team that is constantly giving up 2 on 1, 3 on 1, giving up 40+ shots most games, leaving guys open in front of the net, etc., it won't really matter what his save percentage is if he's constantly getting pummeled or being needed to go cross crease on every second shot. If a goalie looks pretty awesome under fire, maybe he'd be great with a really good team.

And if a goalie is on a really good team and just giving up bad goal after bad goal, then who cares if he's stopping most of the other easy shots that the good team is allowing.

Yeah, watch them lose both and go Gibson-Murray. Ducks and Sens retaining 50% of both and maybe more through double retention and assets coming back.

Would you feel better spending 6m for 4 or 5 years on Kuemper? Or 5x5 on Jack? Or trading a 1st for Varlamov?

I just don't see any good options. And honestly, look around the league. I'm not confident with any teams goaltendings outside of maybe a handful of teams.

In fairness, the literal only way we've ever had competent goaltending is by signing old, expensive vets, and trading 1sts.

Np. I can't justify going 6m for a guy that just pulled off a .902 in the playoffs. And 4-5 years at that AAV for a 32 year old seems nuts. That's the kind of contract that could cost them one of their core guys.

BUT if you trust that he'll provide good goaltending maybe it's worth it. There are no easy answers. I get #bothsides.

A 1st for an expiring Varly coming off a .911 season seems excessive. But that's gonna be the cost. If that's the preference, np.

I sorta get Kuemper but that term might be killer. I hate every option with a fiery passion so I'm on #TeamCheapOptions
