TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Well see what Bunting does this year, but the key thing with him is that over the last 2 years in the NHL he has been an impact player and not just another depth guy.

And he will likely be paid like a good depth guy and not an impact player.

He'll likely be one of the best UFAs available and potentially have 2 straight seasons of legit 1st line production under his belt at the age of 28. And after what other teams saw what Hyman is doing on Edmoton? And Hyman doesn't have the resume that Bunting has...

Yeah.. He's not gonna be paid like a depth guy. This will not be a Mikheyev type contract. It will be Burakowsky or Hyman+.

When I say paid like a depth guy I mean Burakowsky or Hyman.

Bunting was worth way more than that this year. But he is very unlikely to get top line money.

Hyman got 7 years at 5.5 a year ago. Adjust for cap inflation and a superior track record and we're surely going well over 6m on a 7-8 year deal. Do you sign him or target a legit stud that can drive his own line for just a couple million more?

Dom did say he was trying to adjust the model to better filter out linemate effects.

Thing is, the model already has Matthews as the best player last year (by a lot) and Marner also top-5.....so if Bunting is leeching value off of them than that means that Matthews and Marner are even better than the model already thinks, which would be cray.

I don't think we can target another $9-$10 mill player. The value in Bunting is if he is paid like Hyman, but produces like a $9-10 million player.

Which again, is still an if. Gotta see what he does this year.

9-10m dollar value? I can't assign that value to a guy that isn't a line driver himself. Great player and worth trying to keep but let's not get carried away either.

Also he did the same thing in Arizona.

They are just arbitrary numbers. Paid like a Hyman, but produce way more value than a Hyman.

If the premise is that he will be paid like Hyman, that is a big discount if he continues to bring what he did this year.

If he was just another Hyman its not much of a conversation. You'd let him go without thinking twice like the rest of them.

Yeah, I agree with that. I guess I just don't see him being paid as little as Hyman .

Or take that Bunting/Engvall money and spend it on a more expensive winger. or another goalie.

A lot of *what ifs* to this conversation which is why I kinda chuckled it's a discussion in August a year out.

If Bunting has another great year and starts eyeing big money + term and Robertson or Knies emerge it could change the convo entirely.
