TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

There's no winning I think. The bold move would be to trade him and whip out your dick to find a cheaper younger lowkey replacement. But I don't know what that means. The player has to exist and has to be available. Keeping him and hoping he has another year or two in him is definitely the safe move. It would look pretty bad if he goes elsewhere and crushes it and the Leafs lack anything resembling a shutdown pair.
Why is that the gameplan?

Rielly Lilly
Gio Brodie
Sandin Holl

Are we so nervous about that D going into the season? I'd add a 7th guy, but that's it. All those guys can skate, all those guys can play, and there is no weak link. Plus, Lilly and Sandin can - and probably will - be better than we saw them this year.

Get to the deadline, add another Gio type.

I am, yeah.

And keep in mind, the above assume we've bolstered the forwards with the Muzz money.

So not only is that the D, but the F is better too.

It's because you have zero faith in the two kids.

If you thought they could cut it and even improve, you wouldn't view them as such question marks playing beside vets like Rielly, Brodie, Gio, and Holl.
If they had a true #1 stud everything would become easier. I look at that d corps and I don't feel comfortable with any pair playing against Bergchand, Kuchkos, etc.

And I agree that even with Muzz there's always a risk that it could look dicey too. There's no easy answer.
He's gotten injured every year, increasingly with each year.

We haven't won shit with him.

We only have him for 2 years and then he's gone anyway.

We could flip him potentially for some other young dman on an ELC who could step in, or use his money on one, or get another UFA if we're so scared about Lilly and Sandin.

He's not the best dman on the planet. The Legend of Muzzelda is out of control.

I personally still think some patience with both kids is a good idea but it sounds like most here want to trade em?

By the way, if I'm Dubie, I talk to Keefe and say those two kids are playing regularly next year, right?

And if he's pushing back and wanting some Babushkin bullshit, I may need to consider firing him if he won't comply. You don't draft and develop these guys and have them look so good just to sit them in the pressbox.

I mean I think he can get a late 1st and maybe a B prospect (with a middle six ceiling if lucky) in return. That's not exactly the return of the best dman on the planet. Hell, that's a classic package a decent rental at the deadline; something people pay for 15 games of a player. So for me it's not about that. It's mostly about him being something that they don't really have. A good, big defensive, physical d with a proven track record against the best players in the league.

And whether you trade him or he sucks next year in the playoffs, the result is the same. They're going to miss that element. That's all I'm saying. I see the argument for keeping him and trading him.

There's a bit of gaslighting going on too with the implications that he was late career Phaneuf last season. He wasn't himself but he wasn't exactly horrible either. Too much hyperbole there. And he wiped that all out with a brilliant playoffs with probably the best, most stable pair we've seen on this team in maybe 20 years. Maybe that wouldn't have continued but they did a bang up job in those seven games.

you're trading Muzzin for cap reasons, not because you're going to reverse the trade we made to get him. not gonna happen.

I'll take flack for this, but whatever.

The Leafs should trade for Johnathan Toews

You need a 2LC that can bump Tavares to the W? Toews does that and while not ideal from an offensive standpoint IMO still good enough with JT and Bunting?

He can still be a shut down C, and brings 3 rings with him in addition to his leadership ( good and bad)

At 1/5M it's not that big a risk and i imagine even after salary matching ( Mrazek+Kerf) that it doesn't cost much ( 2nd? lotto ticket)
