Not really. They always do that in desperation.

Have a stock of young goalies in the system and find the gem or two in the bunch.

And sorry, expecting 5th round goalie picks to come up aces is too optimistic.

Will need to use a 1st rounder every 5 years or so on an elite prospect who could be the next stud.
 
We haven’t used a 1st on a goalie since Rask. Maybe we’re due.

I still want him to find us a goalie. Use those stats he claims to have access to that aren’t public and find a good fucking goalie.

Top notch prospects in the cupboard? Yea I’ve seen that shit before. Wake me up when we see one on the ice making a difference. Until then he’s provided minimal prospects to the main roster. Besides Bunting riding the coattails of our elite I don’t see a prospect that has come up to make any difference. Sandin, Liljegren, Robertson have all been a mixed bag of not so good for us to this point.
 
I don't track other organizations goaltending development well but if I was to guess, the Leafs probably have one of the worst track records for developing goalies.

Is Briere the problem? For a team with the deepest pockets in the league, there is no reason why they shouldn't have the best development team money can buy

Guys, goalies are FUCKING ASSHOLES. You can't rely on any of them.

You don't sign one for 5 years unless he's young and OUTSTANDING.

Everyone else, 3 year deal max.

The more of them you have in the system, the better off you are. But you'll have to dip into UFA to find a tandem backup, or a mentor for the kid, etc. And then you're doing cheapie 1-2 year deals.

You want to have your own Vasy/Shitsturkey etc. that you can develop, play during his ELC years, and then sign for a NORMAL amount or otherwise bail and go to your next guy you've got in the system who should be ready by then.
 
Liljegren was a Lou pick and was just this year more regularly in the lineup. Prospects take time and even more time trying to break into the league onto 115 point teams.

I get that everyone’s very rightfully pissed off but it still doesn’t actually mean every aspect of this team or GM is bad. Sandin’s 22 and Robertson is 20.

You already named them. Lilly is a fucking stud, Sandin is awesome, Robertson has been lights out in the AHL and not given a chance with the big club, Knies, Niemela, Hirvonen, Voit, and on and on. So, again, whatchutalkinbout, Willis?

Regarding goalies, yes, nothing has worked out. But Freddy was as good as bet as any to get us through, and frankly muffins or not, he suffered the same fate of the big guns not showing up in elimination games. Yet his attitude was shit. Jack has been good for us, but also suffered fucking OT losses thanks to Galch and Dermott, and then a total no-show in game 7 last year (3-1 loss), and then these two stinkers where we couldn't hold a one goal lead and then couldn't score one to tie. Freddy and Jack have been good, but their legacies done in by an offense that goes dry at the absolute worst time possible.

Keep Jack. He'll be cheaper now and is at worst an awesome backup. Fucking turn Mrazek invisible and into a missing person and off the cap, and go find someone who can be a capable 1B. Honestly, with this team, I swear I'm happy with Jack and Kallgren going into next year. We have a fucking superstar team that rode goaltending tragedies this year to a 115 point finish. Who the fuck cares about this dumb position?

Get a fucking forward to make a Core 5, keep the good players like Mikky, and fucking beg Matty to score in Game 7. That's the formula.

This is one of his bright spots so far. The jury is still out until they reach full development but the earlier returns on a lot of Dubas picks are good
 
Pretty sure we brought in new scouts when he arrived, had two very bad drafts and then almost every scout we hired in his tenure was removed from the organization when Dubas was given the role. I went through every staff member a few months ago.
 
To all the people asking me where to get an elite goalie - I don't know but I am not the one getting paid millions of dollars to run this hockey team. It's on Nerdy to pull a rabbit out of his hat and find one - Mrazek was a disaster of a signing - can't pin that shit on lack of goalies being available.
 
I had some hope that Robertson would have looked better in the NHL by now. He's been sorta shit any time he's been given a chance. Not long after he was drafted he looked like a first round, top half of the draft talent. So I get the disappointment there. He's developing like a 2nd or 3rd rounder would typically develop though. Next year you've gotta make the effort to let him grow into the role at the NHL level, even if he's shit at first again. He had a long stretch of ppg+ play in the AHL which is what I wanted to see before he's relied upon in the show. Next year you've gotta start him there and let him develop and learn.

As for the rest, yeah they take time. They typically trade their 1sts so anyone they've drafted under dubas is gonna take time. If they suck ass and nothing comes about in the next 2-3 years then you can rip their drafting.

Knies, Niemela (though I'm always skeptical with euro d points; Mikko Lehtonen has scarred me for life), Voit all seem pretty good. Hirvonen might be decent... Not sure I'm horned up about too much else but if only those guys make it that's an above average hit rate. We'll see.
