Trade Deadline Thread

Sandin was really good all around. The criticisms never, ever made any sense to me. I’m not even a tiny bit surprised by how he’s started with the Caps. Didn’t he have like the best season ever for an 18 year old in the AHL or something like that? This was not some low ceiling guy. Dubie royally fucked up. If it meant playing McCabe on the right side or playing Sandin himself on the right side, they should’ve done it. And if trading him, only for a high upside 22 year old forward. Dumb fucks.

Sandin's track record suggests high end offensive potential. The question with him was always is he too small and too bad of a skater to be a legit top 4. That remains to be seen. But other similar players have figured it out.

Speaking of young offensive D, member when Babs development plan for Rielly was to not play him on the PP and only play him in ridiculous usage shut down minutes as a 20/21 year old. That worked out great.

And remember when they gave all of Rielly’s PP minutes to a Euro UFA named Nikita Zaitsev?

Then handed him a bloated seven-year contract on the basis of the moderate number of points he put up while being force-fed all those PP minutes?

As long as he can keep getting charmin soft usage he will put up points. 75% oz starts will do wonders for anyone with some offensive talent

50-70? Of course not. He's at a 164 point pace right now with Washington.

Fwiw I continue to see him as a Morgan Rielly who is worse offensively but better defensively. And at the end of the day, not a guy you want on your top pair getting the toughest minutes, much like Mo. Easily a potential top 4 guy though, yeah.

They chose 3 playoffs of McCabe over him. The beauty about sports is that we'll soon find out if they got the player evaluations right in the end.
So... Not a Morgan Rielly

Stylistically no, but that's not the point or why he was traded. There's a reason they were never the top 2 ld in a leafs lineup since Keefe has been coach. It's not what he or this organization wanted. And Raz wanted more opportunity so yeah he was never getting a look in the top 4 with Mo locked up.

Of course he would. Brodie and Gio won't be here forever. Sandin could play the right side, or McCabe could've been moved there for a year.

There could be more injuries, just like this year where he played a lot while Rielly was out.

There were so many ways they could've properly worked him into the lineup while he's making dirt at $1.4M.

Of course. I don't know if I agree with their decision but this is how they saw it. Otherwise Raz would have been given more of a look in a larger role. The only time he got that look was when Mo was out.
