Trade Deadline Thread

If he knew that was the reward he probably would have traded a few more firsts for immediate help

Let's be real, we're all gonna accept facials from Doob and Keefe if they win a cup. All logic goes out the window when that happens. I'd love to say I won't forgive them for making Schenn a regular or subtracting but not adding to their depth in their final flurry of trades, but win a cup and there's no sense in over-analyzing anything. They can deposit their loads all over me.
It's just that everything feels off now.

Like they had it all set up, and threw a monkey wrench in it just for fun.

I actually don't mind Schenn, I'll be completely honest. I think he's motivated being a Leaf again, and he brings an element of hard hitting and brutishness back there that we always lack. But he should have replaced Holl, not Lilly. That's the part that fucking stings. No issue bringing him in, but replace the right guy dammit.

Happy with ROR and Acciari - of course ROR gets injured though.

Like the McCabe and Lafferty adds, even if I'd have preferred a forward.

It all comes back to going with Holl/Gus now over Lilly, and ZAR over Engvall. Like, they had the right guys to bump out the worse players, and yet somehow the worse players bumped out good ones.

Who knows, maybe ZAR will be tougher in the postseason, Schenn will make people pay to be in front of the net, McCabe will be a nightmare for opposing forwards, and the Leafs will just be "tougher" to beat.

But I will kinda never concede (unless they win the Cup) that more scoring was the way to go, and they just didn't fucking get it after every year of being muffled in elimination games.

Serious question though...why didn't he do it when Mo was injured for a month?
Go look at the highlights from the Caps game last night.

The first two assists were star type stuff. Two great plays/passes.

And the third one was just a smart shot from the point that got tipped in.

50-70? Of course not. He's at a 164 point pace right now with Washington.

Fwiw I continue to see him as a Morgan Rielly who is worse offensively but better defensively. And at the end of the day, not a guy you want on your top pair getting the toughest minutes, much like Mo. Easily a potential top 4 guy though, yeah.

They chose 3 playoffs of McCabe over him. The beauty about sports is that we'll soon find out if they got the player evaluations right in the end.

Super smart to choose between two good things when you can have both.

It’s why some people never get married.
Raz wasn't staying here long-term playing behind Mo and McCabe. I guess if you trade Mo then Raz is immediately firmly in the top 4.

Yeah that's why I said McCabe vs Sandin. Mo wasn't an option. And Raz wasn't gonna be happy knowing they have gio another season and Mo+McCabe on the left side. They could have kept him still for a year but he wasn't gonna sign with them afterwards. They made their decision that McCabe for 3 playoff runs > keeping Raz beyond next season. We shall see if they got it right. I genuinely don't know.

I don't understand the Morgan Rielly comparison.

Sandin is literally nothing like him.

let's see how this plays out but I have a hard time seeing Sandin turning into this point machine after what I've seen of him here.

The comparison isn't stylistic. They just don't want two guys who are defensively challenged in their top four. Realistically there's only room for one of them long-term. This is ultimately why Raz has been largely stuck on the bottom pair unless Mo is out with an injury. I said it as soon as Mo signed his contract... Raz's days were numbered.

I said it even before then! But yeah, they picked Mo over Raz previously, and then solidified it by acquiring McCabe. Proof will be in the pudding. I really don't know. I was never sold on Sandin being anything more than a sheltered offensive d-man. Perhaps I am wrong on that.

Of course, you can argue Rielly isn't anything more than a sheltered offensive d-man. His skating to me is a massive distinguishing factor at least. That and their respective sizes. But this could backfire spectacularly.

Raz is getting crazy lol usage. 75% ozone starts. Mo sits around 60. Gustafson was at 72% on Washington. Maybe that’s why Gus’s nerdies were so good.
Fwiw I think raz is pretty good defensively. Struggles against high end guys and speed but he’s pretty responsible (unlike, say Mo).
