hahaha, I'm being half fascetious but he is a huge fan of the team, we have large sanctions on Russians, I swear Justin talks about the war in Ukraine more than any other western leader, the consortium members likely don't want their brands tainted again. They also don't want to wait 5 years to get a return on the investment in the player.

Stupid as it might be, the veto option seems the most logical.
 
If the people above Geoff vetoed Michkov it's probably related to the murkiness of his father's death/alleged murder. We drafted other Russians today and traded for one in Gurianov a few months ago so it's not because he's Russian, and the people at that level wouldn't care about the three year wait for him as that's way too hockey-related for them to get bent out of shape over. It could be a desire to avoid having to deal with people connected to a very bizarre and possibly very messy situation. If it's that, I can understand the decision to not draft him a little better.
 
The fact that practically all of this "Welcome to Montreal David Reinbacher" thread is devoted to discussions about why the Habs didn't pick Michkov instead tells us all we need to know about the wisdom of this selection. They fucked it up. It's that simple and it no longer really matters why. They fucked up, and not just with this pick but with this entire draft. It was a colossal waste of a tank year. Now we'll have to tank all over again next year just to make up for it.
