Habs News & Notes: 2014 Offseason & Training Camp

I am not a DD fan and it has nothing to do with the size of my dick. People talk like 52 points is a great. That ranks him 32nd among all NHL centres. 32nd despite playing alongside the 4th highest scoring player in the NHL. His +/- is 24th amongst all centres, and even though that is not the most reliable stat, a 1st line centre on a competitive team should be better than that. And then you have the playoffs, DD has a miserable 10 points in 27 games. All of this while getting 1st line minutes and PP time.

I do NOT deny that DD should be an NHL'er. But the Montreal Canadiens and their fans should demand more from their 1st line centre. The Habs have not won a cup in 20 years! You play to win the game! Galchenyuk has the potential to be dynamic, and IMO should be playing with Max. Pleks is the shut down 2nd line centre, which only leaves the 3rd line for DD. Do I want to pay $3.5 million to a diminutive centre who would be producing considerably less without 1st line minutes and Max by his side? Nope.

And although it is not the determining factor, size does matter. Like it or not, it matters to women, and it matters in the NHL. All you need to know about managements stance on size, is that it wants more of it to compete. DD is not St.Louis or Theo Fleury we can't afford to keep him around because he is good buds with Max.

DD is fine for now. But I preffer an upgrade.

I kind of agree with what you said but we are paying already 3.5 M for our 3rd line pivot !(Eller)

Obviously DD is not a 1st line center in this league, nor is he paid like one. He can be a decent 2nd line center however.

Despite all this, he still put 51 pts in 60 games after his disastrous start of the season. That's 0.85 points per game which puts him at 15th in centers in the league.

Your stats are your stats. You can not ignore the shit and applaud the good.

Trust me, I'm not ignoring the bad. He struggled mightily at the beginning of the season. But his 1 point in 19 games is far away from the norm for him. His career PPG is 0.63, if he had managed only that is the first quarter he would have finished the season with 64 points.

They should demand more from DD while they were pretty complaisant with Koivu.

First off, we are taling about a different "they". Second, the goal is to learn from mistakes, not repeat them. This is now and what is right for now.

There was a poster here who argued that his stats. from last season were 51 pts. in 60 games, as if the first 19 games are not part of the season. Anyway, he's a decent second line center but miscast as a first line center. I would trade him before 14, however.

If you're only talking about his final 3/4 of the season, then you are ignoring the bad.

DD is a solid 50-55 point player. Nothing wrong with that. He's not a star defensively, but he's not a slouch either. His flaw, as terrible as it is, is that he's small.

I have no problem with him on our team. Except that we still have a few too many other small players. That's getting better - certainly dumping Briere and Gionta makes me not like DD as much. Hopefully, in the future, we will have the following as our C;
Galchenyuk
DD/Pleks
Eller

If AG can develop, that can be a strong centre group. I don't care which of DD or Pleks we trade - next summer we should simply deal whichever of the 2 of them will net us higher assets.

The chance of Habs winning a cup with DD as their no1 center is very slim .Not that this is the only issue we have but Habs need a no1 center and i doubt( and hope i am wrong) Chucky will be the one !

Anyway we all know a trade for center won't happen this season but i guess we are still a real top 4 D and a top 6 winger short to repeat at least what we did last year ! With Emelin and Gilbert in top 4 we lack mobility .

Again, not ignoring the bad, but we should not ignore either that he finished the season strongly. I don't think it's wrong to expect from him something closer to 60 points next season instead of 4 points.

Plekanec has really soured on me over the last few seasons. I still like his defensive game but he's been pissing me off offensively and I'm afraid it will only get worse.

care to expand on this?

My thoughts: He seems to be thinking about shooting a lot more instead of using his linemates. I also think he gets a lot of defensive zone starts. I think I will try to look a bit deeper at his stats.

Why is 14 so down on you? Have you done some bad IT work for him?

re: pleks

Last season: 5 on 5 points per 60: 1.29 (moen right behind him 1.17 hehe)
2 years ago: 1.67
3 years ago: 1.41
4 yeasr ago: 1.96

So I could see him getting back to 50+ points based on this. Though his 70 point seasons are not coming back (especially with the lack of 70 point players in the league).

Though I cant find an easy comparison of PP time year over year.... went from 6th on the team to 9th.

Seems to me back in the day an odd man rush with pleks almost always ended in a goal...and usually it was a pass...now he seems to shoot more and has got terrible with his passes.
