OT: The News Thread

Macron is a former investment banker. Part of his plan involves lowing corporate taxes from 33% to 25% and easing up on labour laws to give businesses a break.

He's neither right or left wing. IMO, he's actually challenging the left wing/right wing binary BS people like you love to identify with.

And he would have been my 3rd favorite candidate after le Pen and melenchon, both of whom wanted out of the EU, but well ahead of Hamon and Fillion.

I just doubt he makes good on his promises which can very well lead to even more dissatisfaction among the electorate.

While Macron did win, there was a record number of spoiled ballots and abstentions in the second round.

Hints at a undercurrent of discontent that he needs to properly manage, or else let pen can come back in 5 years and truthfully say that everything but her has been tried and everything has failed them.

You actually would have preferred the cow Le Pen to win?

Too bad France made such a terrible mistake.

Maybe 5 more years of cultural enrichment will wake them up. If it's not too late by then.

Touché.

One of the bigger cyber attacks hit Europe recently, but what I find curious is that Russia was hit as well, Omega reports saying they were hit worst.

With Russia ruled out, who does that leave?

They were ransomware attacks. It wasn't state sponsored by any real country and probably not state sponsored at all

It's kinda weird how quite a few of the people who have the minority opinion in the news and politics threads also happen to be Sens or Habs fans. I'm not sure why but it's interesting to see.

This is already believed to be the biggest online extortion attack ever recorded, disrupting services in nations as diverse as the U.S., Ukraine, Brazil, Spain and India. Europol, the European Union's police agency, said the onslaught was at "an unprecedented level and will require a complex international investigation to identify the culprits."

The ransomware appeared to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was purportedly identified by the U.S. National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes. The NSA tools were stolen by hackers and dumped on the internet

Even though it did disrupt the workings of some hospitals, trains schedules etc in the wrong hands this type of attack could certainly have major ramifications in the future.

I have no idea what team she's a fan of.

I was an avid Leafs fan for most of my life. I'm probably one of few here who actually watched the Leafs win more than one Stanley cup. I stopped following much hockey when my kids were young and when the league expanded to include about a hundred teams. Yeah since moving to Ottawa in the late '80 I casually support the Sens.
