Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Yeah, this is a pretty empty record for him. Gordie played an additional 419 games in the WHA in addition to the huge number of NHL games and when Gordie returned to the NHL at 51 yrs old, scored 41 points, offensive production that Marleau hasn't been capable of for a few seasons now.

Throw in Gordie playing most of his career during the 70 game era and whoever holds the record, Gordie is still the most ridiculously durable, long lasting NHL player of all time.

On one hand, good for him.

On the other hand, Marleau’s record pursuits do feel kind of selfish.

Kind of left a sour taste in my mouth the way he prioritized keeping his consecutive games streak going while in Toronto ahead of being rested up for the playoffs.

He’s also been clearly finished as an NHL-calibre player for at least three seasons now, but he’s kept going just to get this games played record.

Yep. Shittiest record ever, stolen from an all timer.

That contract was such a disaster for the Leafs. He did nothing for the team.

First year was good. In retrospect, even a 2 yr deal probably turns out okay. I do think the kids benefitted from having a guy like Marleau around, just not enough to justify the 3rd yr of the deal (which of course cost us a 1st to unload)

The only lessons they learned from patty were bad ones.

I remember even in the second year of the deal, where he overall wasn't very good at all, he came back after having several days off over the all-star break and actually looked way better for a handful of games before going back to being a replacement-level player or worse.

That's what really moved it into "terrible signing" territory for me. It seemed like clear proof that he could put himself in a better position to help the team win if he made a personal sacrifice and set aside his pursuit of the consecutive games record.

As a veteran of 1600+ NHL games who had ostensibly come to Toronto to provide "leadership" and try to win his first Cup, you'd have thought that'd be a no-brainer of a decision to make. But nope, it was more important for Patty to keep his personal streak alive, and by the time we got to the playoffs, he was worse than useless for that entire series against the Bruins.

I dunno, Matthews got arrested after Marleau joined and was like a father figure to him supposedly Matthews even apparently spoke with Marleau about it and after the conversation still hid it from the Leafs.. Just way too much $ for a guy who was 38 when he signed. The cute pictures of them hanging out that was always posted hardly show he was helping them develop.

It’s still so bizarre to me that Marchand went from being basically a Darcy Tucker clone up until he was 26 to a superstar at 27 years of age.

And not only has he not looked back since then, but the little fucker’s kept improving through his late 20’s and early 30’s.

It’s like the Bruins found some super-soldier serum and shot him up with it.
