2021 Hurricanes Post Season/Summer Thread

That's what I get for not taking the time to actually look at the freaking schedule :0)

So, probably not a Cam Ward number retirement then. I'm back to having no clue why that game would be a premium ticket unless they're assuming the local fan base is much more in to Kirill Kaprizov than is probably realistic.
Assuming Kaprizov signs…

The most exciting thing about Minnesota are those reverse retro jerseys they released last year, honestly, that was probably the best of the entire bunch, although I thought the Kings reverse retro was also very good.

Really the only thing special about that particular game on April 2nd is that its the last Saturday regular season home game on the schedule. It definitely stuck out to me as an outlier for a 'Gold' level game. The other games that fit that Gold, premium priced, no exchanges category are typical usual suspects:

Fri Jan 21 NY Rangers
Fri Mar 4 Pittsburgh
Sat Mar 12 Philly
Fri Mar 18 Washington
Sat Apr 2 Minnesota
Fri Apr 8 NY Islanders

Its not out of realm of possibility that they really decided to premium price the game simply because its the last Saturday night home game of the season, but it sure looks suspicious to me.

training camp normally starts on a weekend so maybe next weekend
I think the prospects are starting to show up, I saw a tweet from Val d’Or wishing Robidas good luck.

Training camp probably won’t open until the Prospects Tournament is complete, which isn’t until Sunday. The first preseason game is 9/28, so I’m guessing that camp will open Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Corey Pronman from The Athletic says that Jack Drury is the “most interesting” prospect to watch at Canes camp.

Drury had an excellent season in Sweden, as an important part of a team that won the SHL title. He’s not the flashiest player in terms of speed or skill, but he’s a very smart player who brings a ton of effort to his shifts. He also offers a different quality than the rest of the Hurricanes system, which is heavy on skill and playmaking. Drury looks close to being NHL ready; if his skating looks good enough in camp he could be a bottom-six grinder.

That would seem like a fight between Lorentz, Drury and Leivo for those last two roster spots on the fourth line assuming that the Canes carry one extra forward. Considering Lorentz and Drury both play center and Roddy loves Lorentz, Leivo is going to have to have a decent camp to make a good first impression.

I figure Drury ends up in Chicago and Leivo/Lorentz will be the 13th forward. Leivo gives them another right shot in the lineup but he doesn’t kill penalties, at least he didn’t for Vancouver or Calgary. Lorentz doesn’t, or at least didn’t, kill penalties either.

Gotta be honest here ... I don't see that Lorentz adds much to the current mix. He can fill in at center, but I suspect Drury is better suited for that role ... because Lorentz is a pedestrian center at best. He doesn't really offer the ability to shift up the depth chart either. If you want max felxibility, a 4th line with Martinook, Stepan and Drury is probably the best option. Of course, Drury has to go out and show it in camp. Leivo is a classic 13th forward in my book. Good enough not to hurt you, cheap and otherwise serviceable. Lorentz is much the same, of course.

Leivo and Stepan are both on 1 year contracts. I figure Drury gets a year in Chicago to get used to the North American professional game and is the first center called up in case of injury, etc. Then the 4C job is his to lose next year.

The Canes hired Michael Futa as senior consultant to Waddell. Futa had been AGM with the Kings and his name was floated for the Canes GM position but he withdrew from consideration. His contract with the Kings was not renewed when it expired after the 2020 season.

A very Karmanos move right there. If you wait long enough, you'll always have another chance to get your guy. That said, Futa's rep in the league took a huge dip in the meantime, and I'm not quite sure why. It's one thing to be a bright AGM type who gets a lot of interviews for bigger roles and just doesn't have the chops to close the deal, and quite another to get canned in LA while they're in the middle of a rebuild when you're supposed to be their personnel/development guru.

Either way ... Waddel has a TON on his plate and I'm sure he's happy to have an experienced pair of hands to help out with some of the hockey stuff.

Canes beat the Panthers 3-1 in the Prospects Tournament. Suzuki, Robidas and Mattheos had goals, Makiniemi came within 56 seconds of a shutout. Back at it tomorrow at 1 against the Lightning. The games are streaming on the Canes website.

I think this is the most likely outcome for Drury. Then again, based on his interviews he's absolutely overflowing with confidence and guys with that much self belief sometimes swagger their way onto the roster.

In the Prospect Tournament today, the Canes came back from 4-1 down to Tampa to tie it at 5. After a scoreless OT, Tampa took the shootout, the Canes didn’t score on 5 attempts. Beck Warm started in goal, Patrik Hamrla played the 3rd. And it would be really good if they replaced Michael Smith soon, there are no stories on the Canes website about the tournament. I’m finding everything on Twitter from a couple of Canes Country writers and Chip, who must be watching the live feed. Aside from tweeting a link to the stream, the Canes Twitter account has been quiet too.

The Canes wrap up the tournament on Tuesday against Nashville, who may not have brought their goalies, losing to Tampa 5-2 yesterday and 8-5 to Florida today.

The Hurricanes should be realizing how good a job Michael Smith did by how little buzz there is out there compared to normal. My Dad was bitching about the fact that he actually had to go seek information on the rookie tournament as opposed to being able to find it at a glance, like usual.
