2nd Rnd '25 Playoffs: Leafs vs Panthers - Flo-Rida them onto the ECF - LFG!

Hockey is too hard in Toronto as a narrative over The people that run hockey in Toronto are morons and the Stars that play in Toronto are losers sure is a choice.

this is the first time the knicks have made it past the 2nd round in over 25 years.

Cool, and they did it in a basketball crazy, massive national market in the social media era.

That's all I'm saying. whatever talk there is about Toronto being a tough market for hockey, 5x that shit for the Knicks and they've managed it at the same time our guys didn't.

I don't think it was an issue before they lost favor with the fans. But it has turned into an out of control circus the last few years and the pressure is unprecedented for this reason. A single mistake or poor game in the playoffs and they'll be getting booed harassed online, etc.

Yup, was gonna make a similar point earlier. I can't imagine it's much fun dealing with the bullshit, but social media is everywhere, and there are multiple big-market teams in every sport that have all-sports talk radio stations - so fucking what? The fact that Vito from Woodbridge disagrees with the deployment of your 3rd line is causing you to lose 6-1 when the chips are on the line? This may be a top 5 issue, but is sure as fuck isn't the only issue, or even in the top 3.

If it distracts at all, thats on the players. NHL media is fucking tame compared to NBA media

i mean it will snap eventually.

it helps that the celtics were a shampion and they lost their best player too.

Knicks and Leafs just seemed like sympatico twins this year. People are remembering what a crazy ass basketball town NYC really is

they had an even longer 3rd round drought than we've had tho.

I mean Marner hired a security team to save him from social media negativity. It clearly gets to him. Not everyone is built for it.

It took a staggering number of consistently humiliating playoff performances and losses before it got to that point. It’s not like these guys weren’t given a ton of runway by the fans and a lot of love before the fans lost patience.

But yeah, at this point it’s a completely untenable situation.

With respect to the pressure in Toronto, many valid points were made however, the missing piece in the analysis is the mental makeup of the individual player. There are those that can ignore it and then there are those that get consumed by it.

Many issues I see are mental and/or character issues.

Most of the fan base hasn’t seen a Cup… so they’re happy to be invited to the dance but the way they lose changes the experience.

They were humiliated at home in back to back games. If they lost last night in OT, fans aren’t throwing jerseys on the ice

It’s why the Leafs asked Mitch to waive his NMC at the deadline

I wonder if it's an ageing fan base that is the most negatively vocal. I gave up on them in 2013 and haven't really looked back. I've probably watched 10 full games since then. I don't miss it at all. That's after being a psycho Leaf fan since I was a kid. Back in the day, before cable, I used to drive an hour just to listen to the games on the radio because they were blacked out in my area. Incredibly, I'm not diabetic, considering how many donuts I ate sitting in Tim's parking lot for hours. It looks from reading the comments that folks of my vintage are the most upset on here. I should point out that the only reason I hang around here is because you are all so entertaining. (y) 😁

I still think the facts on this have been twisted. The Leafs wanted to sign him all year, while he wanted to wait (ironically, for this shitshow). They went to him and asked him if he planned to resign or intended to leave, so that they could at least recoup a similar asset rather than lose him for nothing. He said no, presumably with some statement to the effect that he intends to stay.

In other words, it wasn't "hey, we want to trade you for Rantanen, so will you waive?", but rather "hey, are you planning to leave, because if you are, then we have an opportunity to trade you for Rantanen."

You know, wouldn't it be nice if these overrated, overpaid disappointments were thoroughly assessed for a season or two through the playoffs to determine if they warrant 10+ million dollar contracts? How can anyone even consider giving anything close to those numbers for someone like a Marner, who you know will never be a playoff powerhouse? Paying him to pad his stats in the regular season with truckloads of cash is insane. I'd rather see him as a towel boy than an NHL'er. He cheapens the brand.
