Yep. Starting to tank when Matthews is still under contract and while other teams also own our first round picks would be sheer idiocy.

My ideal approach would be for them to make their best effort to ice the best possible team over the next 2-3 years, but while also stopping the practice of trading away all of our future first rounders at the deadline each year.

If there’s been some tangible sign of progress in the team’s playoff performance by the time Auston’s deal is up and if he’s still elite and willing to re-sign, then you keep trying to win. Otherwise, that will be the time to blow this fucker completely up.

The assets you get when you blow up your roster during a full tear-down, tank and rebuild are just a side benefit—especially since a lot of guys by definition will be getting sold off at low points of their value.

The main benefit is that after you’ve sold off everything of value, you get high first round draft picks that give you the best chance of snagging elite young talent as a result of your team now being shit.

So beginning a full tear-down, tank & rebuild when you don’t own your own first rounder for the next two seasons—sheer idiocy. And in your case, also wishful thinking, since that’d be the best way to ensure the Leafs are a bottom-feeder for as long as possible.
