New Canadian Politics Thread

Apparently it’s big advantage to get leadership of party for past many years

I mean, Francophones make up almost 25% of our population. Makes sense that some of our Federal leaders would be French.

If the point you’re making is that the Liberals have had too many French leaders, well, since Trudeau Sr, four out of seven Liberal leaders have been English. If you include interim leaders, it’s six out of their last nine.

And even Justin Trudeau almost doesn’t count. His mother was English, he’s spent most of his life outside Quebec and he speaks perfect English while speaking French with an English accent.

Anyway though, let’s still count Justin as a Francophone, and go with three out of the past seven full-time, non-interim Liberal leaders having been French. What number of French Liberal leaders would be acceptable to you? Two? Only one? Zero?

Since Trudeau the elder, not counting Bill Graham & Bob Rae who were interim leaders, the leaders of the Liberal Party have been (in order):

John Turner
Jean Chrétien
Paul Martin
Stephane Dion
Michael Ignatieff
Justin Trudeau
Mark Carney

Chrétien, Dion & Trudeau are the only three Francophones. The rest are all English both by ethnicity & mother tongue.

So again I ask—what specific number of Francophone Liberal leaders over that time period would be acceptable to you, if three is too many? Is one or two OK? Or is zero the only acceptable number?

I mean you gotta be prepared for an avalanche of bullshit launched against Carney from every corner of the internet now.

Soon he'll be absolutely hated by a large swath of the population just like JT was. Like obama was, like biden was, like hilary was, like kamala was.

The problem was never really JT, though he was around so long it was fine to move on.

Can't keep neing surprised by this.

Hopefully Carney doesn't have many demons in the closet to help their narratives,, but they don't really need them, and unfortunately Carney as a globalist banker likely does have a bunch.

yuuuuuup. the problem is the internet propaganda/bullshit machine. and the lack of education/tech literacy to overcome it.

Even aside from all the BS, it was time to Trudeau to go. There hasn’t been a PM in living memory that’s bumped up against the 10 year-mark in office without Canadians getting so sick of their shit that they can no longer effectively govern.

Though the anti-Trudeau rhetoric in the last few years is definitely beyond what we’ve ever seen before. And has been mostly supercharged by MAGAts south of the border, and anti-vaxxers/freedom convoy shitheads butthurt that he shut down their carnie carnival instead of meekly acceding to their demands and allowing them to carry out a coup.

The same forces will try to generate the same amount of anti-Carney hate, but they’re in tough considering Carney wasn’t in government during Covid or the Convoy.

And looks like Dougie didn’t back down, thankfully. Just had a presser this morning announcing that the 25% surcharge is on as of today and they’re expecting to collect $400K a day from it.

Also reiterated his threats to double the surcharge to 50% or cut off electricity exports to the States entirely if the tariffs continue.
