Sounds like we may have had a better offer on the table but needed them to take salary back and were not willing to do so - tsn panel

FYI hearing that the Maple Leafs were also among the teams that kicked the tires on Thomas Vanek today....
Not having a 2nd rounder might have cost us Vanek.
So Clarkson is to blame again. Well Nonis but we can blame Clarkson anyway
While that is great, Montreal is a Boston killer in its own right.
Would love to see the habs vs Boston in the first round and have you win as well.
Habs won't fall to the wildcard spot.
Who is this "rest of us" you speak of that thought Clarkson would be useful, and are dumbfounded by how he's performing?Nonis is like the rest of us and thought he'd be useful and paid the market rate, he's probably just as dumbfounded as the rest of us.
Yep, I agree. As much as I wasn't really interested in seeing the Leafs add any rentals, I wouldn't have had any complaints about us giving up a similar package.we gave very little

It's not a bad gamble either. Like Toronto, Montreal hasn't had a ton of luck luring top-shelf UFA's on July 1st. So, Bergevin's now going to be adding a premier goal-scorer to his lineup for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, while at the same time at least creating the chance that Vanek will take a liking to Montreal and considering signing with them on July 1st, when he may not have given Montreal any consideration if they hadn't acquired him.
I'm not saying that Montreal will sign him before July 1st. From all reports, Vanek is totally determined to become a UFA.Except didn't Vanek or his agent pretty much say after the trade that he will be testing free agency july 1st ? Doesn't sound like much of a chance of resigning.

I'm just saying that Montreal is likely hoping that he has a good experience playing in Montreal, and that once he hits UFA, he'll consider signing with Montreal when he may have not considered it before. Montreal will also have the advantage of being the only team able to offer him an 8-year contract, should they choose to do so.
For what they paid to get him, and for the production they'll likely get out of him in the next few months, I think it was a worthwhile gamble on their part.
When did Minnesota suddenly become this popular destination?
