2014 Trade Deadline Thread

Sounds like we may have had a better offer on the table but needed them to take salary back and were not willing to do so - tsn panel

Nonis is like the rest of us and thought he'd be useful and paid the market rate, he's probably just as dumbfounded as the rest of us.
Who is this "rest of us" you speak of that thought Clarkson would be useful, and are dumbfounded by how he's performing?

No one can claim they thought he would be this bad.

Even the haters thought he would bring something to the table but he has been pressbox bad.

This is potentially worse then the Komi signings

It's not even that Clarkson isn't worth the contract. Like 101 said, he was never going to even approach the value of it.

The biggest surprise at this point is that he hasn't even contributed at the level of a third liner, and that's something that pretty much no one could have anticipated. He's literally a minus in terms of relative value right now. No one projected that sort of ineptitude on his part.

we gave very little
Yep, I agree. As much as I wasn't really interested in seeing the Leafs add any rentals, I wouldn't have had any complaints about us giving up a similar package.

It's not a bad gamble either. Like Toronto, Montreal hasn't had a ton of luck luring top-shelf UFA's on July 1st. So, Bergevin's now going to be adding a premier goal-scorer to his lineup for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, while at the same time at least creating the chance that Vanek will take a liking to Montreal and considering signing with them on July 1st, when he may not have given Montreal any consideration if they hadn't acquired him.

Except didn't Vanek or his agent pretty much say after the trade that he will be testing free agency july 1st ? Doesn't sound like much of a chance of resigning.

I'm not saying that Montreal will sign him before July 1st. From all reports, Vanek is totally determined to become a UFA.

I'm just saying that Montreal is likely hoping that he has a good experience playing in Montreal, and that once he hits UFA, he'll consider signing with Montreal when he may have not considered it before. Montreal will also have the advantage of being the only team able to offer him an 8-year contract, should they choose to do so.

For what they paid to get him, and for the production they'll likely get out of him in the next few months, I think it was a worthwhile gamble on their part.

Great pickup for Montreal for sure. But I heard Pierre Mcguire say awhile ago he was almost certainly going to sign with Minnesota in the off season. Just found this as well:

"Maybe later in my career I would enjoy playing in Minnesota because I have built a house there and all my friends and my girlfriend lives there."
