2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

I knew that crap was a mistake when they decided to wear those uniforms. Idiots like LeBrun will continue to take jabs.

They've been the Hurricanes longer than they were ever the Whalers. And way more successful.

But in 2 of the 3 games against the Bs this year they did wear the Whale unis. So it’s kind of an appropriate comment. Carolina Whalers would have been more appropriate than Hartford Hurricanes but whatever... scoreboard....

I've yet to hear Pierre call a western team the Quebec Avalanche or Colorado Nordiques. Or the Winnipeg Thrashers, Atlanta Flames, etc.

No one does. Ever. So why is it ok to do it to the Canes?

Like with Cherry, I've had a permanent filter tuning this stuff out for years. You gotta. Let the scoreboard do the talking.

FWIW, Pierre gets the Dick Vitale treatment from me. He talks and talks but all I register is a slight background noise. I try to do that with Tripp as well, but he's got a real "gift" for cutting through with his nonsense.

Out West one of the more interesting story lines for me has been the play of Erik Karlsson. Before this season, if you had asked me who was better between Karlsson and Burns, my answer would have been Karlsson hands down....not really even close. Watching the Sharks play this year it is a great reminder of how much a team's system sometimes plays into a players overall value. The crappy Ottawa system was a perfect fit to showcase Karlsson and I would have assumed removing the handcuffs of that system would really allow Karlsson to shine in San Jose. Wow, that never really panned out.

After watching them play side by side, Burns is clearly the better player. In the playoffs thus far Karlsson is a -5 and just hasn't looked right while Burns is averaging 29+ minutes and is a star. It will be interesting to see what happens with Karlsson in the open market this summer regarding his value. Is he still injured and that is why his play hasn't clicked? Have injuries taken their toll on him and he will never have his quick acceleration back or was he more a product of the perfect system that showcased his skillset? I really don't know but remain shocked he hadn't looked better on the Sharks.

I think it's pretty widely known that Karlsson isn't 100% healthy and that whatever is wrong with him has had an impact on his level of play. And he NEVER fit the San Jose system. The dude's been a fish out of water all year long. I think it may impact his next paycheck, but not as much as people seem to think. All it takes is two GMs convinced that his play this season has more to do with bad fit and bad injury luck and he's good to go. All that's really changed is that there's no way San Jose is one of the teams dangling a big check.

My thought ... New York and Florida will be all over the guy and he'll still get an obnoxiously big contract.

This flew under the radar a bit last night, but another guy with Whalers/Hurricanes ties is a head coach in the NHL.

Ralph Krueger has been named head coach of the Slugs. He coached the Swiss National team for many years, coached the Oilers for 1 season in 12-13 and coached Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup. He was most recently Chairman of the Board for Southampton Football Club in the English Premier League. His son Justin was drafted by the Canes in 2006 and played 2 seasons with the Cherkers from 2011-13.

That's just such a weird hire. Krueger is unanimously considered a high quality individual but I really though he was done with hockey when he left for England. I'm not even sure how plugged in he's been to the NHL scene since he was on the Canadian 2014 Olympic staff ... where I understand he mostly served as a tactical sounding board as the Canadians had struggled some with more defensive minded European teams like his own Swiss teams.

I know they've been busy striking out on experienced NHL coaches this spring, but going to to old guy who's out of the game and doesn't have than much NHL head coaching experience in the first place just strikes me as .... I'm stuck on weird. I mean, it might work. Who the heck knows? But why not look at some promising AHL bosses first?

Supposedly he put the word out that he was interested in a President/hockey ops position rather than coaching. But the Slugs struck out on McLellan and scrambled from there. He’s also getting paid like a top end coach, I think Dreger or McKenzie tweeted that it’s a 3 year deal for north off $11 million.

Unless he's both coach AND president/GM that's ridiculous money for a guy with Krueger's actual NHL experience. Plus, it's not like anybody else was beating down the guy's door.

The Pegula's love wasting money, look at that mess known as the Buffalo Bills and some of the other weird stuff that has happened up there with the cleaning house of many in the front office on both the Bills and Sabres side over the past couple of years. I think the next big money news out of Buffalo will be the Jeff Skinner signing somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 years at about $8 million per.

There have been reports indicating that the Sabres and Skinner weren't too far away in terms of salary negotiations. And yeah, if they're going to get Skinner to forgo free agency, they'll have to pay him a LOT of money. It wouldn't surprise me at all, especially if the fanbase is unhappy with the new coach.

Wow. NHL completely blows that OT call. That was no goal. Why in OT it is allowed? Apparently one of the refs had a parking meter that was set to expire. Game over

To provide context to James’ rant, the refs in the Blues/Sharks game missed a blatantly obvious hand pass that led to the Sharks game winner in OT.

Thanx Andy. Seriously St. Louis was robbed. They outplayed SJ too, don't be fooled by the score. I mean it was close, Lou was down 3-1 and came back. I'll give the Sharks credit for the work and tying goal. But a (primary assist!!) handpass on the winner? How on earth that cannot be challenged with the existing play reviews. The refs should never be allowed to completely blow a play. Why can't the situation room just dial in. They don't want to... make the obvious RIGHT call?

But a (primary assist!!) handpass on the winner?

It was the secondary assist. Meier batted it to Nyquist who nudged it back to Karlsson for the goal. And this still isn't at the Saints-Rams level because if the goal is disallowed, the Sharks could have easily still won. But it's still inexcusable that nobody saw an obvious infraction that involved the puck right by the crease. And these guys are supposed to be the best the NHL has to offer.

I'm *very* opposed to expanding replay, but in this case, where the goal is reviewed in Toronto automatically anyway, this is a good case for allowing Toronto to say, "Hey, puck was over the line and no goalie interference, but we saw something else on that replay." Kind of like the Fourth Amendment plain view rule. "Someone called about a cat in a tree and, hey, whoa, that's a bag of weed on the table, isn't it?"

Wow, just wow. So what were the 4 on ice officials looking at? Not the puck apparently.

What I really do not understand most about this garage league is the fact that they will pour over 100 still images and take 15 minutes to review an offside call on a questionable goal but a sudden death, playoff overtime controversial goal like last night is simply called "non-review-able"...that just makes zero sense no matter what team you cheer for. I saw the usual excuses being made again last night..."the game is simply too fast for the officials" to follow and "blame it on the GM's" for not having a rule in place on this type of play.

Well, if none of them actually saw it then there's really nothing they can do. The rule book only allows for so much when it comes to that kind of stuff. It's frustrating as all get out, but at least nobody decided they saw something they didn't actually see ... like they did earlier when Pavelski was hurt in that game against Vegas. Either way you end up getting it wrong ... just for different reasons.
