2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

Red Wings have $15 million tied up LTIR with Zetterberg, Green and Franzen, $1.9 million in buyouts and are at 49 contracts with everyone signed for next year except Vanek, Kronwall and Witkowski. Yzerman has his work cut out for him.

In trying to figure out how many of the Red Wings also have no trade/no movement clauses for 2019-20, I keep stumbling into some weird trade where they get Kasperi Kapanen. Is this something that actually happened?

EDIT - no, it was someone playing wannabe Stevie Y.

Honestly, I can't think of a defense for what Holland did to that roster over the last 5 years. It's just shy of professional misconduct ... and the Oilers turn around and hire him. Geniuses.

Ben Bishop takes a shot off of his collarbone and allows two goals in 33 seconds before leaving the game for Anton Khudobin.

Barring a Las Vegas style collapse, it looks like this series is going seven games.

To flesh this out ... Ken Holland has reportedly signed a 5 year, $25 million deal to be the GM of the Edmonton Oilers. He had stepped into a consulting role in Detroit when the Wings hired Steve Yzerman to be their GM a couple of weeks ago. I mean, it's probably better than the last idiot they had in Edmonton, but Holland is pretty far past it. He made an absolute hash of Detroit's rebuild thus far. As bad as they've been the last two seasons, they're right at the salary cap and have been this whole time. With THAT roster. It's ridiculous how many bad to mediocre players he's got signed to fat long term deals.

Edmonton needed a known name to sell to their season ticket holders and to also appease McDavid.

It doesn't matter who the GM is in Edmonton, the same type of guys keep getting hired, guys past their prime and guys who made chopped liver of their roster. Certainly, Ken Holland set the standard, but the cap got in his way. That being said, the decisions on who to hire in the GM position flow from the top. Holland and Chiarelli didn't hire themselves. Nonetheless, good luck. It certainly would do wonders to see EDM as a contender again.

Blues beat the Stars 4-1 to send their series to game 7 in St. Louis on Tuesday. The game was not without controversy as St. Louis scored a goal while Bishop was writhing in pain in the crease, after taking a Colton Parayko shot off his collarbone. The Blues retained possession and Jaden Schwartz scored on a deflection seconds later. Bishop stayed in, gave up the 4th goal 33 seconds later, and was replaced by Khudobin.

The argument was that the Stars never regained possession of the puck after Bishop went down, so there was no whistle. The Stars should have replaced Bishop immediately, although the defensive breakdown that led to the 4th goal seconds later was pretty inexcusable as well.

The way the rule is written, the refs DO have the discretion to stop play if they fear that an injured player is in jeopardy. People are freaking out on the possession thing simply because that's the way the rule has generally been applied. To me, in this particular case it doesn't make sense. A goalie laying prone and seemingly unable to move out of the way of another shot is reason enough to blow it dead. You could end up with a guy getting seriously hurt otherwise. The rules are supposedly there to protect the players and to provide an equal chance for both teams. What I'm missing is how what happened falls into either category.

That said ... stuff happens, particularly garbage officiating, and this is the playoffs. If we aren't freaking out about this, then we'd be freaking out about something else. That's what happens this time of year. It's the season or heroes, villains and BS.

That's the part I don't get. If someone winds up with a big slapper and konks Bishop's melon, I'm sure the NHL would've said that the refs should have blown the play dead because Bishop was clearly in the shooting lane with an attacking team coming at him. Talk about a player in a defenseless position!

Correct. They guy's actual job description is to get in front of flying objects that can cause harm. There's no point in allowing him to be in harm's way when you have the option to protect him. And yeah, if he's faking or whatever ... you deal with it later.

Ah Donut Don, how we miss him ... wait. No we don't. The sad fact of the matter is that, as bad as Koharski was, the guy would be in the top 10 of working refs today ... EASILY. Kerry Frazer would be a best of his era giant of the game.

Forgot to post this ... Flyers have added two former head coaches to their NHL staff. Mike Yeo and Michel Therrien. One nerd and one idiot. Nice balance for Vigneault.

Everyone ready for game 1 in Boston on Thursday night? Just under 9 minutes left and the Bruins are up 3-0. It’s likely that they’ll be without McAvoy after an egregiously missed call where he took out Josh Anderson with his shoulder and only got a 2 minute minor.

McAvoy should clearly be suspended.....but this is the joke NHL. Who knows what will happen.

You only can laugh and snicker when post game McAvoy was quoted more than once calling that hit a “hockey play”. He truly said that more then once, these guys just don’t get it.

Prepare for a blood bath next round, we thought the Caps were filthy, wait till Marchand, Chara and the cast of idiots from Boston start carving up Aho, Teuvo and company. The bad officiating is starting to become the lead story in the playoffs sadly.

Anderson wasn’t injured, he played almost 7:30 in the 3rd period. He and McAvoy were yukking it up in the handshake line after the game too. I’m predicting no suspension.
