2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

I never really followed our bought into the whole "left side" "right side" think with d-men, but now I do. It sure feels like many of our defensive lapses start with a failure to make simple plays that can often come back to the side issue. Maybe Vatanen comes back soon, gets paired with Slavin, and some of this goes away, but having 2 out of 3 pairs with a guy playing their off-side feels like a big problem. Some of our guys are so middling right now, i'd like to see a right shot guy up from Charlotte, just to see what happens.

And Slavin is AWFUL on his off side.

RBA put the forwards into the blender, in an attempt to find some offense. This is how they practiced today, per Chip.

Aho with Nino, Teuvo; Staal with Dzingel, Williams; Trocheck with Svech, Necas; Martinook with McGinn, Foegele.

Sure, it does. Yes, we control our own destiny, but the more the Islanders, Jackets, Panthers and Rangers lose, the easier our path to the playoffs becomes.
You missed my second point. If we back into the playoffs because those guys fall apart and not because we start playing right then the playoffs will be 4 and out The way we’ve played the Bruins or Caps or Lightning will destroy us and I don’t want to see that.

If on the other hand we play well and win ourselves in then we can put up a fight and you never know what happens.

If we play well we control our destiny.

^^^^THIS 10 TIMES^^^^^

One other possibility... If we do make the playoffs the guys may be so focused and even inspired that they actually make some noise. Who really expected the Canes to beat the Caps? Especially in such a hard fought series, even if we were out-gunned by the defending champs. And then take out the Isles in four when they had swept us in the regular season. Either wildcard spot is gonna be a tough series.

We are not disagreeing. Obviously, I want us to going into the playoffs because we won our way there and then see us pull off an upset like we did last year.

But please don't tell me that tracking how our competitors for the playoff slots are faring "doesn't matter."

I agree playing well and getting to the playoffs is much better than just barely making it playing scrappy hockey. On the other hand just making the playoffs is what counts and in the playoffs you never know what happens.

Vatanen skated today before practice. Mrazek isn’t close to returning and may not join them on their trip.

This team isnt going anywhere without a major turnaround. They need a win/loss ratio equal to the best teams in the league.

If we play .500 or less hockey the rest of the regular season. I’d rather not get in because not only would any of the top teams knock us out in the first round but it would also be ugly. I’d rather not spend my money on that.

on the other hand if we find a consistent quality level of play then we have enough games against the teams we’re battling for a spot that we can pass them. And assuming we do that then they will have showed something they haven’t shown since the Islanders sweep last playoffs. Then you never know.

From January through that series last season the team had maybe one or two forgettable efforts. This year it’s one or two per week. Even on the winning streaks this season we’ve won some games where they didn’t play very well.
I think the Boston series last season took a lot out of the team in terms of swagger confidence whatever. I think playing like they have to this point they’d get destroyed by Boston etc. and likely feel the impact of that next year.

I’d love to be proven wrong.

Last 10 games:

Metro:
Washington -> 3-6-1
Philadelphia -> 8-2-0 (!)
Pittsburgh -> 4-5-1

Atlantic:
Boston -> 7-3-0
Tampa -> 6-4-0
Toronto -> 5-4-1

Wild Card:
NY Islanders -> 4-4-2
Columbus -> 1-4-5 (!)

Carolina -> 5-4-1
NYR -> 8-2-0 (!)
Florida -> 4-6-0

Philadelphia and the Rangers surging with 8-2-0 records. Columbus stumbling and only hanging in there due to loser points. Boston doing well.

Everyone else kind of treading water. But if any one of them can get a win streak going they could easily move upward.

I would guess she would move here for the cost of living.

...more likely because she just finished her PhD and this is her first job out of school! Also, she’s an East Coast native.

But seriously, it is great to see the organization making increasing investment in this area. Data-driven decision making is a powerful tool in some many areas.

interesting that she and Tulsky both don't have traditional training in stats. That is not that unusual though,. Lots of people work in stats without a stats degree, like me. Even John Sall cofounder of SAS does not have a stat degree, he was in economics.

I read that the Raleigh Drive Shack is very busy so maybe Dundon will open a Top Golf here too . And the local Drive shack is just down the road from PNC off Trinity Rd.

Elliotte Friedman tweeted that Waddell said Mrazek is 7-10 days away from returning.

Vatanen started practicing with the regular group today but left the ice early. No word on why yet, we’ll probably hear after practice before they fly to Philly.

Anyone else worried that Vatanen might never be healthy enough to play for us? I would have felt better about this if it was a conditional pick only but including Kuokkanen without any assurance Vatanen will even play a game might not have been smart.
