2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Over time, I hope the Canes fan base can start to give the guy a break ... but I'm not so sure that will actually happen. Despite all he accomplished here, I don't think Eric Staal will ever be appreciated in this market the way guys like Francis and Brind'Amour are. Maybe he doesn't deserve to be ... I dunno. But I do think he deserves better than he gets in general.
I believe most fans have come around to a much more positive opinion of Eric Staal than on the day he was let go. And that day turned out to the best thing that happened to him since we won the Cup.

Yes and yes.

I agree. I just wish the core group that still holds a grudge against him would let it go a little bit over time. The guy has had a stunning career, and we can all look back fondly on plenty of good memories. It wasn't a perfect run here. They rarely if ever are.

During the long stretch of going-nowhere seasons we amused ourselves in the stands by calculating just how much Eric was making per listless shift.

Good thing for him that I am not on the Hall of Fame selection committee and Ron Francis is.

The Athletic is reporting that the Vegas Golden Knights are attempting to secure an AHL franchise to relocate to Henderson. They could move to the arena at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, about 2 miles away from T-Mobile Arena while a new arena is being built. The Orleans Arena was the home of the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL and the home rink of the UNLV club team.

Vegas has had an affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves since the team’s inception. The Wolves would have to hunt for a new club if Vegas moves.

Talk about having your AHL team conveniently located. Not quite Flyers/Phantoms when the Phantoms were playing next door at the old Spectrum, but pretty close.

Speaking of the Chicago Wolves, Valentin Zykov has been playing there since his 20 games suspension was served. He has 6 goals and 5 assists in 18 games there. Nic Roy and Patrick Brown are also currently in Chicago. Roy has had a few NHL callups (14 NHL games, 2 goals 3 assists).

The Penguins have signed Marcus Pettersson to a 5-year, $20,125,875 extension ($4,025,175 AAV).

The deal buys Pittsburgh 3 RFA arbitration seasons, and 2 UFA seasons.

You wonder if this might be the end ... again ... for the Springfield AHL franchise. Surely the Florida Panthers would be better served with an affiliate in Chicago where the local ownership has a commitment to winning and has a ready made fan base of their own than having their AHL affiliate stuck in Springfield as an afterthought in a super crowded market.

The trend is strongly moving towards affiliates with strong geographic ties to the parent club. That leaves clubs like Tampa and Florida kind of out in the weeds. There's not a ton of secondary market options local to them that can support AHL level hockey. Maybe Tampa could breathe life back into the Solar Bears franchise in Orlando (currently in the ECHL but with a long history as an IHL team back when that league was a going concern) if they put some money into it, but they've got a pretty good thing up in Syracuse. The Crunch are well supported regardless of affiliation.

Strange picture choice for this story in my NBC Sports email this morning... #WhatsWrongWithThisPicture

In today's edition of 'thank goodness that is not us!' let's review the Nashville Preds situation at center.

Ryan Johansson (27 years old) 19-20 Pay $8 million. Left on contract....5 years $40 million in pay (AAV of $8 million)

2019-20 stats 48 games 10 Goals 17 assists

Matt Duchene (aka organization killer) (just turned 29 years old) 19-20 Pay $10 million. Left on contract....6 years $46 million in pay (AAV of $8 million)

2019-20 stats 45 games 10 Goals 22 assists

Kyle Turris (just turned 30 years old) 19-20 Pay $6 million. Left on contract....4 years $24 million in pay (AAV of $6 million)

2019-20 stats 41 games 6 Goals 13 assists (Ok, yes, those are basically Jordan Staal stats and he makes $6 million)

That's 26 goals 52 assists so far for $24 million and they have a LOT of term and money left on those deals.

If you want to call Aho, Staal and Haula our top 3 centers they are at 42 Goals 37 Assists with Aho only 22 years old and Haula probably not here next season. They make $21 million this season with Aho's salary declining for 4 more seasons (no such luck with Johansson and Turris).

Not sure what Nashville is going to do with these 3 guys but none of them are earning their pay and they all have a LOT of what likely will be declining years left on their contracts for boatloads of money.

Meanwhile in Buffalo, Jeff Skinner is back! -2, 1 shot in over 18 minutes in Buffalo's 5-2 home loss to Ottawa last night after being out about a month.

40 games 11 Goals 8 assists. Getting paid $10 million with 7 years $62 million remaining (AAV $9 million, he will be 34 going on 35 when that contract ends).

Better them than us!!!

On the day of the Battle of Alberta, when George Parros and Stephen Walkom will be in attendance, the Oilers sign Zach Kassian to a 4 year/$12.8 million extension. He gets $2.5 million salary, $1 million signing bonus in the first 2 years, $3.5 million salary in the 3rd year and $2.3 million salary in the 4th year.

Not realizing that Kassian is only producing offense because you've parked him next to McDavid full time ... and that virtually anyone with a heartbeat could do the same ... is a hair short of criminal malpractice on the part of Oilers management. Then again, Kenny Holland IS responsible for the contracts of three guys on the current Top 10 list for most contract money per point produced. Who were you competing with on that contract there, Ken? Scared that your vaguely house trained pet pitbull is gonna walk? WHERE TO EXACTLY? And who could possibly care if he does. Go find the next one in line and plug him in. God help me but some of the people who run teams in this league are morons.

Of forwards on standard contracts who've played 20+ games this season, Skinner has the 12th highest cost per point. Lucas Wallmark has the 3rd lowest cost per point in that group.

Considering all players on all types of contracts, Svech has the 2d lowest cost per point. Petterson is #1. Wallmark, Necas and Foegle are 19th, 25th and 28th, respectively. That's pretty good value.
