2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

What confounds me a bit is why we signed Ryan Dzingel. I know we wanted another NHL forward given that Justin Williams was still up in the air and we were worried about a lack of offense both 5v5 and PP, but Dzingel pretty much fits the same mold and the guys I listed above. He is offense only.

Oh, I get it. I looked at some of his numbers right after we signed Dzingle and he's been a very good possession player in recent years, and a big time play driver his last year in Ottawa. I'm sure they were thinking he would fit right in with fairly skilled line mates like Huala and Necas, and for a while he did. But he never seemed to settle down, and really reacted badly to a rough stretch in late fall when he couldn't seem to do anything right. He's just not a confident player right now. Hopefully he'll bounce back over time ... because he's a LOT better than he's shown here.

Big Buff is a true boom or bust trade candidate for sure. If he ever could come back from that injury imagine plugging in that type of player to your lineup come playoff time in a seven game series! I could see a true contender like Boston or Tampa biting on that...

Maybe it’s a confidence thing with Dzingel? Nino looks better with a couple of goals under his belt, maybe Dzingel needs 1 to get going. But Wallmark is in the same boat, that line has been hot garbage for a couple of weeks.

I think Roddie put the guys that we’re working on one line and told the rest to figure it out or we lose. But basically decided not to punish those 3 with dead weight.

Nino for a while was looking dangerous but not converting. Then he disappeared and once more he's playing hard but he does need to convert occasionally

They would have to give out suspensions I would think for fighting if they make that rule. Certainly game misconducts.

It wouldn't take long for the players to adjust to not being able to drop the mitts and for purists to decry the change and insist that stick work and cheap shots will increase without the ability for the players to police things by fighting. I don't believe that will turn out to be the case but you for sure will hear that argument against it.

---edit----

They postponed that vote until the summer.

You can't defend yourself in concussion lawsuits if you allow players to hit each other in the head with their fists.

Yup. The theory of this year's team was that the fourth line would carry its own weight on the scoresheet and that just hasn't happened. Wally has had a rough sophomore season, McGinn and Martinook haven't been all that good other than on the PK units, and whoever else has been down there as kind of a forward in exile has just disappeared. Nino did it and now Dzingle is doing it. It's a problem, because that line HAS to give you something to help balance things out in the offensive zone. Give Wallmark credit for that one hot streak he managed, but that was pretty much 100% power play production when Huala was out. Ever since that streak cooled off, he's been a cipher.

The hits keep on coming for Columbus. Oliver Bjorktrand will be out 8-10 weeks with a sprained and fractured ankle suffered last night against Philly. He’s their leading goal scorer.

Not to celebrate other guys getting dinged up, but you gotta love that news coming out of Columbus...although we could have did without both teams getting points last night...
