2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

I would think concerts, ufc, etc will go to the new arena. So that $165m will probably go to waste except for a few years.

Probably. But they probably didn’t anticipate the Isles getting a new arena so close and so quickly. It’s only about 10 miles away and will be served by the Long Island Railroad. And the new arena will hold about 2,000 more than Nassau for a concert setup.

The Habs took out the Isles tonight, dropping them to 2-6-2 in their last 10. The Jackets are 2-4-4 in their last 10. It's there for the taking with any sort of run.

The Blues announced an AHL affiliation agreement with Springfield. You’ll recall that hey lost their affiliate in San Antonio because Vegas bought the Rampage and have applied to move them to Henderson to a rink to be constructed.

That leaves Florida without a AHL affiliate and the Chicago Wolves without a NHL parent. Seems like a match, right? But there are persistent rumors that the Canes are moving their AHL affiliate to Chicago, which would leave Charlotte for the Panthers. I still can’t make sense of that, after moving the ECHL team to Greenville.

Well, Kahn was in the ownership group that Karmanos added--not sure how those folks made out. Also, he wants to win and the Canes basically totally changed their team composition this year and further at the deadline.

I suspect there may be more at play that the obvious location conveniences.

If it happens, wonder what it means for coaching staffs and the like (Springfield's coach is Geordie Kinnear who was an assistant with both Tom Rowe and Jeff Daniels)

Waddell worked with the Chicago owner and GM when they were the Thrashers affiliate. He may also be wearing 2 hats at the moment; he’s listed as the GM of the Checkers, although they do have a VP of Hockey Ops.

GM duties in Charlotte are by committee, same as they are in Raleigh. Two hats, yes ... but not the way people assume.

This would, presumably come down to money and relationships ... NOT geography. Most outsiders put too much stock in geography anyway. Thinking like fans won't get you very far. Sure, it's fine that call ups can get in a car and be in Raleigh in 3-4 hours, but how much of that actually happens? Most call ups are NOT that time sensitive and a lot of the time either the Canes or the AHL team is on the road when a guy gets called up. Waddell has a long standing relationship with the franchise operators in Chicago, who would require very little financial and professional support from the parent. Chicago also has the market support and the money to fill out the roster with top flight minor pro free agents. It's just not as big a deal to shift the affiliate as a lot of people are acting like. If it happens, it'll be absolutely fine. If not ... also fine.

Oh, also ... a lot of people are assuming that Kahn still has an ownership stake in the Canes and that is far from a given. I know that Dundon paid off most of the minority owners when he took over, with the eventual goals of getting rid of all of them. Where that stands relative to Kahn, specifically I don't think anyone knows for sure. But the far safer presumption is that he's NOT a minority partner anymore rather than the other way around.

Canes website says there are 14 minority owners and they name 7 of them. The other 7 are silent partners. Were there more than 14 when Dundon took over? Or is the website out of date?

That section of the website may well be out of date. I know for a fact that at least 2 of those 14 are no longer in place. It could also be a matter of timing, with Dundon buying their interests over time. Either way, some reporter or another could bother to actually ask whether or not Kahn is still a minority partner before simply assuming that he is. That's kind of their job and stuff.

The IIHF has cancelled the Women's World Championships, scheduled to start later this month in Halifax and Truro.

Frank Seravelli tweeted that starting today, the NHL is closing dressing room access to the media. Dressing room is an odd term, unless it means the specific area where the players dress and they'll be accessible in other areas of the locker room.

Fredrik Claesson doing us a solid tonight with a goal for the Devils against the Rangers. Actual value from the Vatanen trade (might be the only value).

Pretty sure they didn't actually consult an epidemiologist on that one, but hey ... let's do SOMETHING, right? This league, man.
