2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Some local kids team goes up to Canada every year for a big tournament and the Canes support that. I think it's an all star team with kids from all over the state. Haven't heard about it this year so maybe they did not go or it has not happened yet.

The German and Austrian hockey leagues have ended their seasons. No playoffs. The Austrian league includes 1 team each in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy.

I would be very surprised if they don't cancel the championship tourney they play every year in Europe in April/May. No NHL players will want to go for 1 reason. why do they have that every year? Just to make a few more bucks?

The Jr. Hurricanes are the umbrella organization for Tier I and Tier II youth hockey and Tier III junior hockey. The Carolina Eagles that Christer asked about rebranded as the Jr. Hurricanes for this season.

The trournament that Paulie referred to is for PeeWees (11-12 years old) only, in Quebec City. It used to be a separate, tryout based team before the Hurricanes were fully involved in youth hockey here. I think they send the PeeWee AA team now.

So if/when the Canes are forced into playing home games with no fans, my recommendation to them is to offer returning STMs the value of their remaining unused regular season tickets and parking passes +5% to be used towards next year's tickets and parking (this would be an alternative to getting cash back, which would also be offered).

Way back in the day when the Whalers were taking playoff ticket money and then missing the playoffs, they would offer to hold your playoff money and apply it to the following year's season tickets, with interest (which was around 6% at the time). I wasn't a savvy investor back them (I'm still not) but I always took that as a decent goodwill gesture.

At the current pace of COVID19 developments and reactions, I would say that the odds of fan attendance for this Saturday night's home game against Pittsburgh is at best 50/50.

Yeah ... this is a rapidly unfolding situation and we're nowhere near seeing final measures taken. Look for large public events to get more and more restricted as we get through the next week and change as the number of virus confirmations ramp up in North America.

yes they will certainly offer a refund or a credit to next year. It's the same they did in the past for playoff games that were not played. Now they just charge only for games played.

from twitter:

Larry Walker, soon-to-be baseball Hall of Famer, will be listed as the Avalanche's official emergency goaltender Sunday in Denver when they host Vegas. Growing up in B.C., he dreamed of playing in net in the NHL.

I've since seen the correct wording, but at least 6 headlines this AM claimed the NBA had cancelled the remainder of their season.

Yeah ... reporting on this whole topic has been fraught with inaccuracies and over-statements. It HOPEFULLY illuminates the ongoing need for a professional, competent news reporting industry that is focused on informing instead of entertaining.

There is a Board of Governors call at 1. In the meantime, the league has advised teams not to hold practices, morning skates or team meetings.

All they’re doing is delaying the inevitable.

It's safe to assume that every league and every sport is pretty much going to be shuttered until further notice. Go work on that golf game, or your garden or that home improvement project you have been putting off, and most importantly, try and stay healthy!

Yeah ... the NHL train is rolling into the station after that 1pm meeting/call. It sounds like a suspension with no specific timeline following the NBA's model, but we'll see that the official word is this afternoon.

I doubt the NCAA continues down the path they're on for very long either. They've got the luxury of waiting until the conference tourneys are done, I guess, but the tide is running the other way. I haven't seen or heard much about MLB yet. Has anybody else?
