2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Pretty sure they didn't actually consult an epidemiologist on that one, but hey ... let's do SOMETHING, right? This league, man.

It was an interesting follow on Twitter over the weekend. On one side was Grant Wahl, whose wife is a doctor specializing in infectious disease. On the other side were the various beat writers, pointing out the importance of locker room conversations for them to be able to do their job. There is a big difference between what they do and what a columnist like Wahl does, even though they’re not nominal “sportswriters”.

Yeah, I get the reduced contact with outside agents aspect, but if they really are still allowing credentialed media access outside of the changing area then they aren't reducing anything. That's all up in the air right now, I guess. The league is apparently making contingency plans for playing games in empty arenas if this thing eventually gets completely out of hand like it has done in Northern Italy.

Bottom line ... the nature of the problem changes daily and I don't trust the NHL as far as I can kick them be intelligent about any of this.

We have the first empty NHL arena order. The Santa Clara County Public Health Officer has banned events with more than 1,000 people. It takes effect on Wednesday. That likely effects the Sharks, whose next home game is 3/19.

I wonder if the Sharks will try to get a waiver from that order. Probably won't work but they might try.

They will not seek a waiver.

They will not seek a waiver.

Not necessarily empty arena games. Well, the Shark Tank may be empty on game day, but that might be because they are considering alternate locations for the games.

Oh ... and look forward to more of these County and State Health Dept orders. If we stay on the current infection curve, we could see a handful more of them by early next week. And be cautioned, one of the areas most likely to be effected is central NC .... so ... be forewarned.

Trinity Academy in North Raleigh is closed for the day after a parent tested positive for Covid-19. The parent is following CDC guidelines and is quarantined at home. There were 5 more confirmed cases in Wake County yesterday too. Cooper will speak at noon today alongside a Coronavirus task force.

5 Wake cases were all people who worked at Biogen in RTP so that whole place is working at home if they can. They also have a factory there so those people can't work at home.

I assume Staples Center is very booked up with 3 teams but maybe the Sharks could play in San Diego or one of the other AHL arenas in CA

Bottom line is ... we're on the upslope of the infection curve. So these confirmed numbers will be getting bigger at a rapid pace until the curve peaks. And it's going to do that regardless of what we do in terms of public policy, but public policy makers will feel pressure to "do something" as the numbers get bigger and the public fear ramps up. Look for that to increasing include shuttering arenas, because let's face it ... sporting events are textbook non-essential, higher risk public environments. May as well learn to deal it it. There's a decent chance we never finish this NHL season, or finish it in some sort of modified form. Same with college basketball and the NBA. We may also see a delay in the start of the MLB season. And none of that is really all that big a deal in the grand scheme ... not that sports fans won't come out of their skins screaming complaints.

NCAA will have empty buildings before they cancel stuff. Remember around 90% of the entire NCAA budget for all sports is funded by the tourney TV money from CBS and Turner. It would be a big surprise if they cancelled games except maybe the first weekend. Which means they would be down to 16 teams and go from there. For pros they won't be happy with no fans, they would have to refund a lot of money.

Cool ... remember that a legit public health crisis is a bigger issue than the NCAA's revenue issues. They get the vast majority of that from TV anyway, so playing in closed buildings sounds like an option if the Universities are up to exposing students and staff to travel ... or can, for that matter. It's putting that kind of stuff ahead of public health concerns that gets counties in trouble. Italy probably should have forced cancellation of Serie A games a couple of weeks before they finally got around to it. "Don't be like Italy" should be a baseline expectation for American public health policy.

I agree health is way more important than cash. Maybe the NCAA doesn't agree and tries to play some games without fans? If they cut it down to 16 teams they could do that all in 1 city over a week. Of course not sure what city they would pick with an empty arena for a week. I guess since they prefer FB stadiums those are not busy now. That FB stadium policy screws the state of NC from getting a final 4. Instead the Final 4 goes to BB "hotbeds" such as Tampa, Houston, Minn, New Orleans., Dallas, etc.

If they cancel the whole thing it won't bother me. Same as any other sport cancelling playoffs. I hope the Canes make the playoffs but if they don't get to play that is good for my wallet.

By coincidence Canes emailed STM today about NCAA 1st and 2nd round tickets for 2021. Might buy some just to resell most of them to UNC or Duke fans. :)

What team is this? Do they have any kind of relation to the Canes, more than the name? Why I'm asking is because a lokal boy from where I live play there.
The USPHL is the third tier of junior hockey in the States.

EDIT: I should provide more detail; it is one of the Tier III leagues in this country, but it is not sanctioned by USA Hockey, at least not at the Premier level that your local boy plays at.

Ohio joins the empty arena club. Note however that it’s a request from the Governor, not an order.

Thanks. So the junior team has no real connection to the Canes then.

I think they do receive support, including possibly financial aid, from the Canes org:

"The CAROLINA JUNIOR HURRICANES HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (CJHHA) is a not-for-profit organization founded in May of 1987. CJHHA has served the Raleigh and Triangle area for 25 years. CJHHA is the largest USA Hockey travel based association in the Carolinas with nearly 550 members ranging in age from 8 to 18. We offer a comprehensive set of programs ranging from Skills Development Clinics to competitive league programs for Tier II A through Tier I AAA Travel players.

In February of 2007, CJHHA formed a partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes NHL Team. The Hurricanes through their Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey (CYAH) program work closely with the RYHA to develop and promote youth hockey. Under this partnership, all CJHHA teams are known as the Carolina Junior Hurricanes and wear the Hurricanes logo.

In January, of 2019, RYHA and the Carolina Eagles merged programs and officially rebranded to the Carolina Junior Hurricanes. The organization is now excited to boast 25 boys teams at the AAA and AA/A levels, as well as 10 Girls teams at the AA, A, and Select levels. We are proud to say the two organizations together are working to provide an even stronger foundation for Raleigh area hockey players.

The Junior Hurricanes work collaboratively with area House/Recreational programs to develop youth hockey players skills and provide additional competitive playing opportunities."

I have a buddy whose kid is a goalie for the Carolina Junior Hurricanes Pee Wee AAA Major team. They seem to win a lot
