2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

OK, that's a good beginning. Hopefully this whole bubble idea works, though I have my doubts. Go hockey!

Keep your eye out for news out of the MLS bubble. They've had two teams drop out, but one did so late and has guys stranded in the bubble in quarantine. If the virus starts being transmitted IN the bubble, all bets are off ... and MLS' situation in terms of the run-up and check-in was most similar to what the NHL is doing.

The Fayetteville Marksman of the SPHL have a presser at noon tomorrow. Just spitballing here, but does anyone else think it’s possible that either Dundon bought them or they‘re our new AHL affiliate?

Unconventional would fit Dundon's profile, but wouldn't AHL would have to announce a 33rd (expansion) franchise first/also? Their 32nd is already spoken for and pre-affiliated with Seattle. Seems like there would be more buzz/leaks if an AHL shakeup was in the cards, not just a pop-up next-day presser by the at least 2 leagues lower Force/FireAntz/Marksmen/etc.. But yeah, what could possibly be going on at that level of hockey franchise right now to warrant a presser at all?

Fayetteville arena closes in 2022 so they are probably announcing a move. Asheville has had hockey teams in the past but they don't now so they might move there. Certainly there are other arenas in the southeast that would like a team . Richmond has no team but their arena is closed and they are looking into building a new place.

Thought it was only the Crown Arena and Theater closing, not the Coliseum where the hockey team plays.

Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw is out. He hasn’t played since suffering a concussion on November 30.

It looks like an older arena in Fayettevile is closing, not the newer place the Canes played at . The newer place was built in 1997 so it should be ADA compatible. So who knows what they will announce today.

Unless somebody's willing to invest in new ice making equipment, Asheville isn't an option for hockey anymore. It's more likely to be something straightforward like Dundon buying the Marksmen. It's not a great time for complicated machinations after all.

Why would he buy such a low level team? I'm sure they are cheap but it doesn't make sense unless he wants to upgrade the team to the AHL. the arena seats around 10k so I guess that's OK size for an AHL team. bigger than Bojangles in Charlotte. I got into the Canes game there for free, I was on my own and as I walked in someone gave me a free ticket. I think the opponent was the Caps and somebody lost a tooth or 2.

That would be the only reason he’d buy it, to upgrade it. And like I said, I was just spitballing, based on nothing other than a low level team is having a presser. And it’s notable that it isn’t a concurrent Canes presser. So there is a 99.9% chance that I was all wet anyway.

Florida assistant coach Mike Kitchen has opted out. He’s 64, one of the oldest coaches on a playoff team. Only Rick Bowness in Dallas and noted bridge troll Jack Martin in Pittsburgh are older.

Artemi Panarin, Leon Draisaitl and Nathan MacKinnon are the finalists for the Ted Lindsay award for most outstanding player as voted on by the NHLPA membership.

Why does anyone ever buy a minor pro team? Because they want to. Heck, Karmanos got a better return on investment from the old Florida Everblades than he did owning the Canes all those years.

Moot point of course, but whatever.

Yesterday the Islanders were able to sign super goalie prospect Ilya Sorokin to an entry level contract using the bargained rules in place for the restart. His one year entry level deal will basically pay Sorokin nothing as its not allowed to include a signing bonus and he is not allowed to play for the Islanders this season (he can work out with the team).

As Sorokin's entry level signing age is '25' (he turns 25 in 3 weeks), his entry level deal is only for 1 season, the 19-20 season. That means he is will have completed his entry level requirements without having been paid a dime and without having played a game.

As a follow up to the entry level deal that is simply a paper transaction, the Islanders signed Sorokin today to a 1 year extension for the 20-21 season. He will get a $1 million signing bonus and a $1 million salary. These rules effectively have allowed Sorokin to skip entry level requirements and limits.

Goaltending will continue to be one area that the Canes are behind in when compared to most of the rest of the Metro. Most of the Metro teams are going to be sporting some solid young goalies

Caps - Samsonov
Pens - Jarry
Flyers - Hart
Rangers - Shesterkin
Jackets - Merzlikins
Isles - Sorokin
Devils - Blackwood

Maybe someday for the Canes?

And don’t forget, the California teams bought AHL or ECHL teams so they could relocate theIR AHL teams out west foreaiser player movement. And Vegas just did it with San Antonio. If Dundon bought a team and made it the AHL affiliate, they wouldn’t have to worry about negotiating an agreement every few years. Vertical integration is a thing.
