2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Carlson and Josi are first time finalists, Hedman is a finalist for the 4th year in a row. Carlson has been the front runner since about mid-October, I don’t see any way he doesn’t win it.
Barring the voters waking up and realizing that the way they vote for this award is stupid because it's all about points generated. Oh, wait. They already voted and Carlson has the most points, so yeah. He'll win easily. That he can't hold Josi's jock and doesn't really defend very well are obviously beside the point.

Carlson will win the Norris easily. Selke could be Bergeron or O'Reilly, hard to really pick a favorite there.

Multiple writers have discussed Slavin in regards to the Lady Byng and said he was in their top 3. Eventually they release the full voting tallies, so we will see where Slavin actually ended up, but based on what a lot of writers have stated in regards to him being robbed, he must have either finished 4th or 5th in the Lady Byng voting OR a lot writers are completely clueless.
Take a cruise through some the expanded stats guys' work. Couturier SHOULD walk off with the Selke by a mile and a half, but ... yeah. Maybe my issues with the NHL awards is less about the shabby criterium and more about the idiots they let vote.

Dreger says there will be a virtual presser in Edmonton on Thursday. The league will reveal procedures for The Bubble; amenities, restaurants, access points, etc.

KHL clubs are in preseason training, for exhibition games scheduled for August 4-9 in Sochi. Avangard Omsk won’t be going; they had 20 staff members and players test positive for Covid-19. If anyone was wondering where Bob Hartley was, he’s been there since 2018.

Here are the referee and linesman assignments by hub. From last year‘s refs, Dan O’Halloran and Tim Peel are out, TJ Luxmore and Frederic L’Ecuyer are in. There are no playoff rookie refs in Toronto but Hanson, L’Ecuyer and Rehman have worked 13, 11 and 9 games, respectively. Among linesmen, Shandor Alphonso is the only rookie in the Toronto hub.

Any league that rewards Francois St Laurent with post season work should be ashamed of itself. L'Ecuyer is also clueless, but less harmfully so, and most of this list is borderline comedically bad ... but St Laurent is a freaking menace.

I love that a grand total of eight minutes passed between when Andy posted the ref announcement and Jeff commented on it. #SoOnBrand

It will be interesting to see if the referees are impacted at all by there being no crowd. Hard to claim home team bias on penalty calls in an empty arena.

Not that they won't still mostly suck anyways...

I deliver on this promise ... I will, 100% of the time, let you know how I feel about the sorry state of NHL officiating

The Islanders will become the 29th team in the league playing at an arena named for a financial institution, signing a 20 year/$275 million deal with UBS. OK, I exaggerated a little, it’s 8, not counting them since Nassau Coliseum is listed as their home arena. There are also 2 arenas named for insurance companies.

Hockey Twitter is already awash in IBS jokes.

But seriously, the renderings look nice and I'm glad the Fishsticks will get a nice new building in their actual home market.

Seattle will announce their name tomorrow at noon eastern.

That yellow Lab had BETTER factor into this.

Seriously ... they've waited so long that I don't care anymore. Call the team whatever the heck you want at this point.

Probably lots of places to go to watch the announcement, but the Seattle Times is supposed to be streaming the virtual presser. You can find it here:
