2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

I hate if for Columbus how that game ended. So much time and effort for it to end on a flukey play like that, but that's the magic of the playoffs.

Imagine how much quicker that game might have ended if only the two blind guys in stripes hadn't thrown away their whistles for the duration of OT. Torts was complaining, but Holy Crap ... I lost count at 35 obvious uncalled violations, and that was in OT3. Like it or not, power plays are a regular part of the game and when you basically take that element away then games are going to tend to stretch on forever.

It was funny watching Seth Jones and Torts squawk about the Atkinson/Hedman non-call on the short handed breakaway. That was actually one of the only good officiating moments in the entirety of OT. It would have been a crime if the refs called a penalty there when there actually was no penalty after letting 100 real slashes, hooks, holds and interference slide.

Yeah, they only called the penalties they had to, the high stick and delay of game. The one that Torts was complaining the most about was actually a good non-call though.

The house cleaning in Pittsburgh has started. The Pens won’t renew the contracts of assistant coaches Jack Martin, Sergei Gonchar and Mark Recchi.

Yea, it was the coaches that caused geno and others to look like they were ready to be playing golf. So it goes......

I think JR would like to move out Jack Johnson and Matt Murray as well, Jarry seems more than capable to be the starter in Pittsburgh moving forward.

Murray is a RFA with arbitration rights. So JR is either stuck with him or he can non-tender him, which makes him a UFA immediately and brings no return. I guess he can try to trade his rights to someone but how many times has a team traded rights to a RFA? None?

If Jimmy "wants" to move Johnson then he's been told in no uncertain terms that it is a thing he should "want." We all know how he is with those guys he gets fixated with.

Montreal GM Marc Bergevin said that coach Claude Julien was taken to the hospital last night with chest pains. In a reflection of the times we live in, he disclosed that it was not Covid related. Kirk Muller will take over as coach the rest of the series.

Nick Backstrom is out for the Caps tomorrow, he’s in the concussion protocol after taking a late high hit from Anders Lee less than 3 minutes into yesterday’s game. Lee was penalized for interference but there won’t be any supplemental discipline.

I hope they win it for Claude. Need to tie this up. The Habs can skate with these guys.

They can, and they are comfortable grinding it out because that's all they do anyway. It's actually a tougher matchup for Philly than the other way around. Montreal just have to get enough offense to make it stick.
