2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

I'm just happy the the number one pick ended up with a team that was unlikely to have made the playoffs had the season continued.

Jim Rutherford had his end of season media availability today. Per Josh Yohe of The Athletic, He said “There is something wrong. Changes need to be made.” Buckle up kids, we’re going to see Penguins flying out of Pittsburgh.

Easier said that done given that a lot of the guys that Jimmy should be moving are rendered all but unmove-able by the combination of bad contracts (that Jimmy has handed out like candy), the salary cap realities of this off season and the fact that nobody wants old, slow guys.

JR also said: "Rutherford said the Penguins are still in “win-now” mode and that ownership’s primary goal continues to be winning the Stanley Cup. However, he acknowledged his Penguins need to get younger."
Cue up: Back to the Future's DeLorean. Get younger or get fluxed (capacitor, that is)

He has 16 players under contract for next season and $13 million of cap room. Both Murray and Jarry are RFAs with arbitration rights. And he’s on the hook for 3 more years of Jack Johnson at $3.25 million per. Marcus Petterson’s new contract kicks in next year at $4+ million per. Brandon Tanev just finished the first year of a 6 year/$21 million contract that has a 10 team no trade clause. Not bad for a 30 point guy.

A problem I see is that Rutherford has taken some swings on a fair number of guys who just haven't panned out and don't look likely to turn it around anytime soon. I mean, start with Johnson (we all know he had a career-long blind spot for that guy) sure, but they gambled on (or took on) contracts for guys like Zucker, Bjugstad and Tanev that haven't paid off, they extended Hornqvist at an advanced age, and THEN we get to the gamble they took on Petterson. They're set up for a transition in goal if JR can finally quit Murray, and they've got some easy contracts to walk away from with guys like Schultz, McCann, Sheary and a number of depth grunts ... but it costs money to replace NHL players and I'm not sure they have any cheap/easy fixes in their prospect pool. They're in a position where Jimmy could bring in a decent number of guys and still not address any of their real issues in any meaningful way.

That said ... put a decent goaltender back there and everything is probably fine for a year or two.

Jackets/Lightning to overtime. That’s gonna mess with the schedule, Canes probably won’t start at 8.

Lightning win it at 10:27 of the 5th overtime, seconds after Gavrikov was stung by blocking a shot and out of it.
