2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Based on Brian MacLellan’s comments yeaterday, the Caps want an experienced coach. LeBrun says he expects them to reach out for permission to interview Laviolette, Gallant and Babcock. The Leafs owe Babcock $5.8 million per for the next 3 years, so he has no financial need to coach again. But he’s 57 And if he wants another bite of the apple, he probably needs to get back in the game soon. I’m still not convinced Gallant can coach an established team. He brought Florida their first 100 point season and was left on the loading dock 22 games into the next season. And 2 straight playoff appearances in Vegas couldn’t save him from the same fate 49 games into this season.

Since Ovechin was drafted , Caps coaches:

Glen Hanlon: 1st NHL job
Bruce Boudreau: 1st NHL job
Dale Hunter: 1st NHL job
Adam Oates: 1st NHL job
Barry Trotz: 2nd NHL job
Todd Reirden: 1st NHL job

And they seemed to be too cheap to keep Trotz
Hey ... they got two decent NHL coaches out of that list, and four who are unlikely to ever have a head coaching job again ... in a league that recycles coaches for fun. I'm generally in favor of new voices and new ideas in a league that starves for that, but in Washington's case they're absolutely nuts if they don't bring in somebody with some experience this time.

I mean ... Babcock is experienced, but he's also a fraud. So, yeah ... PLEASE hire him.

Bah. Old fashioned, sure ... but if we can't get to the point where we expect better than caveman "woman look good, is distracting, should make sandwich and leave sports to manly men" nonsense, then why bother? I'm over defending stuff because it reminds me of the old days.

Besides ... all the other stuff aside, Milbury freaking sucks at color commentary. There are probably 15 guys working for NHL teams that are better than that clown.

He sucks in the studio too. And I’m not sure he did any real game analysis. Most of the discussion seemed to be between Forslund and Boucher.

Of course he didn't do any actual homework. He's the "talent." That's why the guy sucked at his job ... it's also why Roenick sucked at his job, and it's why NBC got rid of Bill Clement a few years ago. All too precious to actually dig in and learn anything about the "other" teams in the league aside from the ones NBC trots out every weekend on the national broadcasts. And in all of those cases, it took those guys making caveman comments before NBC made a move. They can't lose that TV contract soon enough to suit me.

He’s been there 13 years. As Richard Deitsch noted in his weekly media column at The Athletic, he was regarded as “sometimes controversial, usually quotable and always interesting,” by NBC Sports execs and was seen as an attempt to duplicate Don Cherry.

I would modify that statement thusly ... he was occasionally controversial, quotable in that he often said stupid things and rarely interesting otherwise.

Avs better get their mess together quickly. They blew a 2-0 lead and gave up 5 straight to Dallas, losing 5-2. They’ve given up 10 goals in the 2 games.

Isles blew open a close game in the 3rd, winning 4-0. Down 3-0, Vigneault pulled Hart for an empty net with just under 8 minutes left and Devon Toews put it to bed with a 185 foot wrister 11 seconds later.

Rutherford said Pitt is likely to move a goalie this summer, both of them will be RFAs . I wonder if the Canes may be interested in one of them.

Considering that the one they're likely to move is Murray and he's been hot garbage for the last three years, nah. At best he's pretty much exactly the same as what Carolina already has.

And will cost more than either Mrazek or Reimer, he’s coming off a 3 year/$11.25 million, $3.75 million AAV contract.

If Jimmy can't trade that guy before the deadline to give him a qualifying offer, he might be better off just walking away. Nobody in their right mind (so, I'm obviously excluding Edmonton, San Jose and Calgary here) is going to give a guy with three years in a row playing at replacement level a $4 million AAV contract.

The Penguins have acquired forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Pontus Aberg, and defenseman Jesper Lindgren from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Evan Rodrigues, David Warsofsky, Filip Hallander and a 2020 1st round draft pick.

Wow that is a lot for the Pens to trade for 2nd/3rd line winger. I like that trade for the Leafs, a lot! The longer Kapanen plays the less likely anyone is going to be willing to part with a mid-1st round pick for him. He's not that good.

As one person on Twitter put it, the Pens traded their 2020 first round pick for their 2014 first rounder. The Pens don’t pick until the 3rd round this year. They gave up their 2nd rounder to Chicago in the convoluted Robin Lehner trade.

That is such a weird deal. Kapanen is fine ... useful, speedy middle six winger who I suspect has peaked. His best so far is a 40-something point season, but he is the kind of guy that Pittsburgh has had success with upon pairing them with Crosby or Malkin and inflating their opportunities. Still, he's nothing more than solid. Lindgren is a guy that Toronto fans seem almost scared to see promoted ... so he should fit right in with that Pens D Corps. Aberg has been on the fringes of somebody's prospect pool for what seems like forever. Nashville, Edmonton, Anaheim, Minnesota and now Toronto have all bailed on the guy. He's a 50 point per season AHLer ... if you need one of those.

And Toronto gets a 1st and a bag of ... random stuff. I mean, they needed a 1st, so good on them for that. They also need guys to play on the NHL roster on the cheap and I really don't think any of this helps them there ... and now they have to replace Kapanen. Rodrigues certainly doesn't do that, although I guess he can at least make the roster. Probably. Maybe? I suspect that Nick Robertson may be the front runner for that slot, regardless. Hallander is a long term project the Pens had stashed in Europe. He ain't playing with the Leafs anytime soon, even if they like his upside. Worsofsky is a journeyman who spent the last couple of years as an AHL mentor type. I mean, this is spare parts central here. For the Leafs, I guess the pile of leftovers was the secondary price for that 1st rounder.

Oh ... and I'd lay take even money odds that Toronto's pick ends up being the "best player in the trade." Since people seem to need that.

FWIW ... there's some chatter that the Leafs were trying to dangle Kapanen to get their 1st rounder back from Carolina. I'm kinda glad we didn't do that ... although I do think that kid's motor would have been a good fit here. But not for a 1st.
