2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Habs put Shea Weber on IR so he’s out for at least a week. The playoffs are slipping away from them, 7 points behind the Panthers for 3rd in the division and 6 behind Toronto 6, both with games in hand on the Habs. I imagine the exodus will start soon.

I dunno man. Seems like ownership is backing Bergevin to hold the line on the roster sell-off because they think they can compete next year. Maybe they move a player or two, but I doubt they make any significant changes.

The Vegas Golden Knights have purchased the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. The team will finish the season in San Antonio and relocate to Las Vegas next season pending AHL approval. They will play in the downtown Orleans Arena for 2 years while a new arena is constructed in Henderson. Presumably, the Blues, currently affiliated with San Antonio, will move their prospects back to the Chicago Wolves, which was their affiliate from 2013-17.

The league and Players Association are meeting in Toronto on Tuesday to restart negotiations on an extension of the CBA. This is the first meeting since both parties declined to reopen the current agreement in September. They did meet with the IOC and IIHF on Wednesday to discuss the 2022 Olympics. That still seems like a long shot.

I don't think the Olympics is going to happen. The NHL doesn't want it, but is willing to consider it as a bargained item for the next CBA. So that now becomes 'ok NHLPA, what are you willing to give up to make the Olympics happen in 2022 and beyond?' Remember that there are around 700 NHL players in the union at a given point in time. Only 100 or so of these players would actually go to the Olympics. That leaves the other 600 players basically being asked to collectively bargain to give up 'something' for what would amount to just an extended break every 4 years. That is a tough sell for those non-Olympics players.

IMO, that's brain dead thinking on the part of the league. "The players want a thing, so it must be a bargaining chip" is straight out of Evil Corp's labor negotiation playbook. It's cheap and thoughtless.

Let them play, but schedule games anyway and don’t pay them for the games they miss.

And kindly don’t charge me as much for tickets to games that are not NHL level. After all, you’re saving money on payroll for those games, right?

Move hockey to the summer olympics. Problem solved. You’re welcome.

I'm sure Olympic cities would relish the challenge of keeping arenas at a cold enough temp in the blazing summer to support ice for just hockey. I understand the idea and I know that is what was done with basketball, but basketball is much easier to support any time of year than hockey is.

US Women's soccer league did not shut down for world cup last summer. NC Courage lost 2 or 3 players for over a month. They won the title anyway. I guess they decided that missing the players was worth it to promote women's soccer.

A small metropolitan area like the Triangle supports six sheets of ice (soon to be seven) that operate year-round, with beer leagues running through the summer. Any decent-sized city should be able to do the same, unless its a city that doesn't already have hockey. This would not be an issue for any of the upcoming Summer Olympics cities of Tokyo, Paris or Los Angeles.

That's 100% the least likely suggestion to be acceptable to the NHL. They resent shutting down the league for 12 days as it is. There's exactly a zero percent chance they'd simply allow their most marketable players walk away and miss games that count for pretty much anything, much less for a tournament they don't profit from or control. None. Zippo. Nada.

They also couldn't give a flying eff what some other league does ... especially not one in another sport.

McKenzie tweeted that the Oilers and RFA to be Darnell Nurse are nearing agreement on a 2 year extension with a AAV just over $5.5 million. It brings him to his UFA year but they hope to work out a long term extension in the summer of 2021.

The NHL released 297 documents related to the concussion lawsuit. Colin Campbell should get ahead of the fallout and just quit now. Bettman and Shanahan also have some ‘splainin to do. Bob McKenzie also makes an appearance, in an email exchange with Campbell saying of Daniel Carcillo, “Never a bad thing to suspend Carcillo. He's dangerous. Not all there.”

Campbell had already been documented breaking the rules to ignore disciplinary action against his own son ... and we see even more of that here. The guy is CLEARLY a part of the "old boy" problem that persistently holds the NHL back and he should have been fired a decade ago. And FWIW ... Bettman sounds look a real toolbag in some of those emails. He's not not smelling too good right now either.
