2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

The Chara cross check was a joke to not see a suspension there, but again Jacobs and the Bruins just seem to have a separate set of rules that apply to them.
Worth pointing out that, even if Boston was the only team that operates under a separate set of disciplinary rules, that would be enough to justify Kane's complaints. But they aren't. Kane may be a lowlife ... OK , Kane IS a lowlife ... but that doesn't mean he's wrong. Because he just flat out isn't wrong. The lack of consistency and transparency wouldn't be allowed for a minute in a sport with more of a gambling footprint. Like 'em or not, the sports books are big business and they don't like uncertainty and perceived unfairness. Without Vegas, the NFL would probably revert back to two columns on their weekly injury reports ... Dead and Not Dead.

Good article on The Athletic with Bruce Boudreau, in an interview about 48 hours after he was fired. We make light of Fenton’s folly, trading Nino for Rask, but Boudreau was hired by Chuck Fletcher, worked for Fenton and was fired by Bill Guerin. That’s 3 GMs in 3+ years.

I'm thinking Ferland needs to shut it down for the year (maybe longer) and find a better concussion specialist for treatment. I know the Canes dodged a bullet there, but you hate to see a guy with that much career in front of him struggling to even play a whole game.

Vancouver is shutting him down for the season. Brock Boeser has a rib cartilage fracture and will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks.

Mikko Rantanen will be out “weeks” per Avs coach Jared Bednar, after sliding shoulder first into the boards.

Ugh. That's just unfortunate for Rantanen. No faster than he was moving, 9 times out of 10 that just ends up with him being sore. But he appeared to catch his shoulder the wrong way on contact and it doesn't take much to dislocate that joint and cause lasting damage.

3 weeks sure come fast. Canucks GM Jim Benning said that Boeser’s injury is worse than initially feared and he may be done for the season. Which makes the Toffoli trade look even worse.

Yeah ... people sometimes sleep on the prospects when looking at those trades, but that Madden kid has elite skill. He's not physically gifted but elite skill doesn't grow on trees. Losing Foote might well come back to bite Tampa in the butt as well ... probably will, IMO. And I really like Toffoli. He'll be a good player in Vancouver, for sure ... and then he'll probably waive goodbye this summer and they still won't have Madden.

Did I mention that I don't like rentals unless the payoff has the potential to be truly memorable? Vancouver did this to try and save their playoffs, NOT because they're a contender. That's the kind of rental I just can't get behind.

The Red Wings beat the Habs last night. In itself, that’s an achievement. However, it’s the first time in history that the Red Wings have swept a season series of at least 4 games from the Habs. They’ve scored 125 goals on the season, 14 against the Habs, 11.2% of their total. They’re also 2-1 against the Bruins this season.

Florida Panthers recalled Aleksi Saarela from their AHL affiliate yesterday (he had no points in 3 games earlier this season for the Panthers averaging 11:41 TOI per game during the callup). They had been playing with less than 12 forwards for quite a while, including some nights (most recently their loss last Saturday against the Oilers), where they have dressed 10 forwards and 8 Dmen.

Zykov, Saarela, now Gauthier...all these guys were hyped by some as sure bet NHL players yet they have struggled in limited showings at the NHL level. The Canes have had a pretty good read on these players when trading them away and it has seemed to be pretty spot on so far.

I do like the "early recognition of the inevitable" aspect of our prospect assessment process and the ability to essentially sell high while the getting is good.

Eric Tulsky’s fingerprints are all over that.

Yup. And I know that Tulsky's models do not like one dimensional players. That's one thing those three wingers have in common ... they have one trick. It's a good trick, because scoring is never bad ... but the Canes under Tulsky's more prominent influence over the last couple of years are just not building the roster with specialists.

I 100% agree with that assessment JB. Saarela, Zykov, Gauthier and Skinner are pretty much one way players, or at least those kids appear to be that way at this stage in their career.

What confounds me a bit is why we signed Ryan Dzingel. I know we wanted another NHL forward given that Justin Williams was still up in the air and we were worried about a lack of offense both 5v5 and PP, but Dzingel pretty much fits the same mold and the guys I listed above. He is offense only.

When that offense dries up (last 17 games, 0 goals 4 assists), he is of little use out there. His PP contributions have been my biggest concern (1 PP assist in those 17 games). Maybe its not all Dzingel's fault, but I had all of these visions of Dzingel out there on the 2nd unit PP sniping goals and being part of a dynamic 'goals from lots of guys' PP unit. Boy has that fizzled.

Wonder if somebody will take a flyer on Dustin Byfuglien as a reclamation project? Fraught with peril but damn that guy can be a beast
