2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Torts would have bag skated Werenski mercilessly if he missed any part of camp.

That contract should set Werenski up to make $8 million+ per when it expires. The money over the 3 seasons is $4, $4 and then $7 million.

Winnipeg signs dman Josh Morrissey to a 6 year/$50 million extension starting with the 20-21 season. He’s in the last year of a 2 year/$6.3 million contract so his salary nearly doubles. He gets a NMC for 22 - 25 and a modified NTC for the last 3 years.

2020-21: $8 million
2021-22: $8 million
2022-23: $5.2 million
2023-24: $8 million
2024-25: $6.4 million
2025-26: $4.8 million
2026-27: $4.8 million
2027-28: $4.8 million

Justin Faulk just raised a glass and sent his agent a thumbs up emoji...

Yeah ... I dunno. There's a lot of similarities between Morrissey and Faulk ... except Morrissey has never actually had a breakout scoring season in the NHL and Faulk has posted 15+ goals three times. I'd say he's fairly well encouraged by young Morrissey's payday.

100% agree. Faulk should be able to secure something close to that same AAV of $6.3 million, maybe not that long on term, but easily in that $6 million a year range on his next deal. And for that, I'm happy the Canes are trying to find him a new home.

McKenzie says the Flyers and Provorov have agreed on a contract, 6 years with a $6.75 million AAV.

Somewhere along the line the Wild got Kevin Fiala signed to a 2 year bridge deal at $3 million AAV.

Keep this on your radar this weekend...

The NHLPA is supposed to vote today on whether to opt-out of the CBA, facing a Sunday deadline if they want to invoke that option. (The NHL declined to opt-out by the deadline it faced a few weeks ago.)

By all accounts (including a very good overview from Katie Strang in The Athletic today), the tenor of the negotiations between the players and the league is pretty cordial and an opt-out decision would not signal a breakdown in negotiations. The biggest issue continues to be the escrow formula and the salary cap calcuations, with both sides indicating that they are willing to modify the math to make it more workable for both sides.

It sounds like labor peace is a reasonable expectation, but younever know how these things will play out until the end.

Marner and the Leafs agree to a contract. 6 years/$65.358 million, $10.893 AAV. Specifics details on salary/bonus to follow.

So, on any given night, 40% of the Leafs players on the ice are going to be essentially on minimum contracts. Their entire D corps is FA at the end of this year except for Reilly. They have eight players on the 23-man roster who are essentially making minimum wage who are FA at the end of this year. This soap opera is just getting started.

Marner's contract:

19-20 $15.3 million bonus $700k salary ($16 million)
20-21 $14.3 million bonus $700k salary ($15 million)
21-22 $9.608 million bonus $750k salary ($10.358 million)
22-23 $7.25 millon bonus $750k salary ($8 million)
23-24 $7.25 millon bonus $750k salary ($8 million)
24-25 $7.25 million bonus $750k salary ($8 million)

Its going to be tight for them this season and next season...but assuming the new US TV deal is as big as predicted, the cap could easily go up to $90-100 million in a few years. They are going to try to outscore everyone with superior offensive talent in the meantime because they have no money to left to pay good Dmen.

Isabelle Khurshudyan reports that the NHL will suspend Evgeny Kuznetsov for the first 3 games of the regular season, stemming from testing positive for cocaine at the World Championships. The league doesn’t consider cocaine a performance enhancing drug but the suspension is likely due to him misleading the league in May, when video of him sitting beside 2 lines of a powdery substance appeared online.

Faulk’s price keeps going up. Wild sign Jared Spurgeon to a 6 year/$53.025 million extension, a $7.575 million AAV

Minnesota continues to be curiously managed despite losing the GM who was supposed to be the problem. Makes you wonder a bit. I like Spurgeon but he's a smallish 29 year old guy with a lot of miles on the tires. He's VERY unlikely to age anything like well enough to make the last 3-4 years of that deal make any sense at all.
