2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Faulk’s price keeps going up. Wild sign Jared Spurgeon to a 6 year/$53.025 million extension, a $7.575 million AAV

You can only smile and laugh at the thought of a tiny, aging defenseman like Jared Spurgeon being paid more than the likes of Slavin, Pesce, Gardiner etc...some of these new contracts are just laughable.

If anyone pays Justin Faulk $6.5-$7.5 million per season for more than 5 seasons they will regret every moment of that contract.

Yup. But with the market clearly headed in that direction, it just makes Faulk less and less likely to be a Hurricane much longer. Bless him for showing up to camp and busting his tail, but I suspect he'll be moved before opening night.

Marner and the Leafs agree to a contract. 6 years/$65.358 million, $10.893 AAV. Specifics details on salary/bonus to follow.
Bottom line ... it's an obnoxious amount of money for a playmaking winger, but at least they got it done. And it's not SO obnoxious that they've completely poisoned the well for the rest of the RFA forwards. So ... way to go Leafs? Whatever.

Charlie McAvoy re-signs with Boston, 3 years/$14.7 million, a $4.9 million AAV. The actual breakdown is $3.7/$3.7/$7.3.

We can only hope.

I actually think he should take a home town discount if he really wants to stay with the Canes. Otherwise, get this done. I agree that it is in Faulk's best (bottom line) interest to get traded here, now asap while these remaining D RFA's are getting signed and settled and the market gets more narrow on who's available. Hopefully a team will step up and more importantly we can get something good for Faulk too. As more time goes I'm afraid Waddell may pull a Skinner and we'll wind up with "Pu part Deux" in exchange for Faulk.

McAvoy’s first year is $1.2 M base and $2.5 M bonus. The 2nd year is $2.7 M base and $1 M bonus. The 3rd year is all salary.

I honestly don't think this team really needs Faulk past this season ... if they even need him now. Dougie is already taking his place in the top 4 on the right, and Pesce BADLY needs to back on that role on another pairing instead of wasting away on the third pair. TVR is a perfectly suitable 3rd pairing RD and is a much more budget friendly option down the road. Likewise, you need to make a path for Priskie to have a shot at the big club fairly soon. We've all seen what the current good version of Faulk looks like and honestly ... we've got better options. I don;t want him taking a new deal, hometown discount or otherwise. He's a good dude and a hard worker, and sometimes you have to move guys like that to keep the staff from getting stale with homegrowns who really aren't pushing the needle anymore.

As for Pu .... in this case, just get a better prospect. It shouldn't be hard.

We’re probably going to go through this next summer too. Hamilton has 2 years left at $5.75 million cap hit, $6 million actual per. He’ll be 28 when his contract expires in 2021. What’s it gonna take to sign him? Or do you count on Priskie being ready to run the power play from the right side, or let Gardiner run it?

I think you need to see what Priskie has to offer at the pro level before even going into that evaluation process. Dougie's numbers are a step up from Faulk's and he's going to cost more to extend. I figure you get through the season, figure out what the plan is on Dougie and move accordingly. I'd guess that if he has another solid year, he MIGHT take a bit of a discount to sign since this is the first place he's really fit. But that's a discussion for another day, really.

And FWIW, with the way Dundon has set up the structure here you can be looking for fairly serious roster turnover on the regular. That's the only way this model keeps moving forward. Get stuck on too many current roster guys and the whole thing falls apart for lack of opportunity.

The NHLPA Executive Board declined to re-open the CBA. The current CBA remains in place through the end of the 2021-22 season.

Huzzah!

I would not be at all surprised to see Dundon and company already being proactive by next summer with Dougie just like they were this summer with Faulk. Gauge the number Dougie is looking at with his next contract at or around the draft next June, then start shopping for a replacement or alternative plan if Hamilton's number is not close to what they think is fair. The Faulk timeline this summer would seem to be a carbon copy next summer with Dougie.

Huzzah ... I guess.

I hope to great God almighty that the NHLPA spends the two years between now and then educating their rank and file on what escrow is, how it actually works and why it's in the CBA. I've heard so many ridiculous, uniformed and frankly self destructive comments leading up to this announcement that I'm concerned ... and this has largely been from veterans who should be leaders and thus should know a little bit before shooting off their mouths. From reports I saw, those idiots wanted escrow reduced even if it cost them money in the long run simply because they don't freaking understand the concept. Part of what they pay PA dues for is education and it's obvious they aren't getting their money's worth out of Fehr and Co.

That leaves Patrick Laine, Kyle Connor, Matthew Tkachuk, Brock Boeser, Mikko Rantanen and Brayden Point still unsigned as camps continue. Apparently there are rumblings now that Mitch Marner's camp was working on offer sheets at some point in the process.

Two offer sheets rumored for Marner ... supposedly shot down by the player.

Also, Laine has joined pre season camp with SC Bern in the Swiss league. Surely anxiety levels in Winnipeg are remaining low ... ha.

We keep saying it but man, did we or didn't we get the best player on that flyin finn line =D

HANDS DOWN

Our guy had talent, drive, high IQ and a.... LEVEL head.
