2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

First off ... get Laine out of your heads. That would require re-making the entire roster on the fly and there's simply not time enough left before games that count to do that.

Secondly ... sure. Winnipeg is a weird one for Faulk to not have excluded, mostly because nobody ever seems to want to go there. So take advantage and figure something out. IF Buff decides to bail of course. If not ... whatever.

If you’ve ever been to Winnipeg in the winter you’d understand why no one wants to move there;)
I lived just south of Winnipeg for 2 years. Brrrr.

And to say the entire roster would have to be re-made on the fly is not really an exaggeration.

As it stands now on CapFriendly, the Canes are $2.25 million over the cap, but that’s with 25 players (14f, 9d, 2g). They’re probably going to carry 22 on roster so either Bishop or Gibbons and 2 of Fleury, Forsling or Claesson go and they’re under the cap, by about $20k. Is Laine going to sign for about the same money as Faulk makes (which is really a net of about $4.1 million since we’ll have to carry 2 of the dmen listed above)? Umm, no. So either another roster player would have to be included in any trade or they have to completely revamp the forward lines. Or both, if the included player doesn’t offset the cap hit enough. And we’re 2 weeks from opening night.

Please I don't want Laine here. I'm starting to feel more and more the same way about the "other Finn" too.

I won't have any issue taking one of their other top prospects, also a Finn, Kristian Vesalainen for Faulk tho =D

Oh I definitely agree that there is little to no chance that the Canes and Jets could realistically swing a trade where Faulk heads to Winnipeg and Laine comes to the Canes. I'm just saying that you are going to hear the pundits talk about it, a lot, until Laine is signed, Faulk is traded, Buff decides not to retire, etc..

The afternoon guys on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio were already chatting about it Laine and Faulk yesterday. That is going to continue.

As much as I would love to have Laine on the Canes PP, Brindy would HATE the guy for every other aspect of his game. He's not a good fit for the Canes and what we do to begin with. Considering what he said the other day about not playing on a top line, I would say Brindy would tell Waddell and Dundon '1000 times NO!' on the idea of acquiring Laine. Doing so would completely destroy the message Brindy gives about earning everything on this team. And kudos to Paul Maurice for sticking to his guns and burying Laine where he likely belongs on regular shifts. I would expect nothing less from Coach Mo.

So no worries, Laine to the Canes doesn't have to be figured out because there is zero chance of it happening. That won't stop media pundits for suggesting that such a trade might happen.

And to say the entire roster would have to be re-made on the fly is not really an exaggeration.

Yeah. I'm certainly not immune to exaggerating to make a point ... or a joke ... but in that case I was dead serious. Signing Laine would take a serious financial commitment even for a bridge deal and that would mean a complete salary re-structure on the Hurricanes. And it would have to happen before the start of the season ... so, no pressure or anything. Plus, you can't just plug Laine in and not create a spot in the lines for the guy, which would require its own set of issues.

Yeah, no. That's all just too much to ask a front office to do in such a short period of time. Heck, I was a bit concerned when they were going to have to wedge Kase into the mix. Laine is the kind of guy you have to build a line around from scratch. It's all just a lot to do in what amounts to two weeks.

Sens sign dman Thomas Chabot to a 8 year/$64 million extension, starting next season. He’s in the last year of his entry level contract. The new contract is all salary, no bonus but breaks down as $7M/$7M/$4M/$8M/$10Mx3/$8M. He has a 10 team NTC for the last 4 years of the deal.

Dougie Hamilton’s price just went up again.

Checking in on a couple of former Canes in camps...

Michael Russo reports that Victor “the trade was one for one” Rask is on the bubble in Minnesota. It took him 5 tries to pass Boudreau’s skating test.

It appears that Aleksi Saarela is headed to the AHL again. There are reports that he demanded a trade to Chicago and trashed the Canes organization in an offseason interview. Maybe work a little harder and stop complaining?

Its possible a team or 2 will take a Zykov like waiver flier on Saarela. He would immediately be at least a 3rd liner on the Sens.

3rd year in a row that Saarela has shown up at an NHL camp and promptly been told to go away. Congrats on that, big boy. Honestly, with his offensive talent, that's just ridiculous. All anybody asks you to do is show up in shape and do what you're instructed to do for a couple of weeks. A smidgen of discipline and Saarela could be working on making some serious money on his first RFA deal this summer. Instead, he'll be lucky to still be playing in North America.

On Saarela again ... I just looked at some of the guys that will be beating him out for roster spots in Chicago. He should be ashamed of himself.

Not sure where to put this, but is Boomer Gordon coming back to NHL Network Radio? I was sad when Patrick O'Sullivan and now, no Boomer-- anyone know??
Boomer's still on, 1-3p now. Laughlin moves back to mornings.

I may need to get back on XM. I miss NHL radio. And hate local OTA radio.

I've only ever had it for my cars but they expanded the standard vehicle packages to include streaming on a computer or other device. I downloaded the app on my phone and can listen at work now.
