2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Since I switched to working at home, the only time I ever listen to OTA radio it's to catch a live sporting event. I can't sat I miss it in any measurable way.

There were times over the summer when I would lose the SiriusXM signal in my wife’s car for hours at time. I’d switch to OTA because trying to talk her through switching the radio input to Bluetooth and starting Pandora or Sirius on my phone while I’m driving is an impossible task. Once I got to a traffic light, I’d get it changed.

Leafs have to be feeling good about having all of their players under contract. The clock continues to tick for Rantanen, Tkachuk, Point, Laine and Connor.

Their fans sure seem happy with it. They'll have flexibility issues down the road if the cap doesn't increase as much as expected, but for the medium term they should be set up pretty well.

Of course, Marner is now got a target on his back thanks to the big contract. I think it'll be fine, but for the sake of his sanity I'd think he'll want to avoid a slow start.

Lightning re-sign Point, 3 years/$6.75 million AAV. No breakdown of the actual yet. LeBrin tweeted that it’s more than $1 million higher than their last offer.

The AAV is more than $200k lower than what Nylander is signed for. Point has 73 goals in the last 2 seasons, Nylander has hit 20 twice but he does have 80 assists in his last 2 full seasons.

The breakdown of Point’s contract from LeBrun

Breakdown of Point contract:
Year 1, $5.25 M total ($1 M salary, $4.25 M signing bonus)
Year 2, $6 M total ($2.5 M salary, $3.5 M SB)
Year 3, $9 M all salary

Edit: LeBrun corrected year 2

Boomer's still on, 1-3p now. Laughlin moves back to mornings.

I assume Boomer still also has the 6-7 Faceoff on weekday game nights, but they didn't post that.

UPDATE: Boomer said he's NOT doing the 6-7 Faceoff, but he wanted to (said he fought against it, but lost).

Also for those that liked his fantasy hockey segments with Higgins, he's on tour in Europe at the moment and not available, so while Boomer will talk fantasy, he won't have dedicated hours on the topic with Higgins.

The AAV might be $200k less than Nylander but after taxes I would rather be Point.
This. Not only does Point avoid municipal income taxes, he also avoids State income taxes. And if he rents a home and leases a car like a smart boy, then he avoids Florida's super high property taxes and most of their hidden service fees.

Oh ... and this whole "mold breaking RFA season" is turning into a bust for everybody not named Mitch Marner. Virtually everyone else is getting something very much within the existing first RFA contract pay models.

Just saw that Canes alum Kevyn Adams has been named Senior VP for Business Admin for the Sabres. He's worked for the Pegula family for years now, in various capacities. Good for KA.

Yep, a non-hockey role. He did play 4 years in college and didn’t ply until fall. Maybe he got a degree. Regardless, good on him.

KA definitely got his degree from Miami (OH). I had a chance to talk to him for a bit at one of those fan kiss and make up things before the 05-06 season ... following the lockout season when the team was doing everything they could to make up for the missed season. IIRC his degree was in business admin and you guys know he went to work as a player agent before working for the Sabres and then the Pegula's other hockey interests on the biz side. Good dude. Smart guy.

Dreger and McKenzie both reporting that the Flames and Matthew Tkachuk are nearing completion of a 3 year bridge deal with around $7 million AAV. The Point deal was probably the tipping point (no pun intended).

Flames sign Tkachuk, 3 years/$21 million.

As an aside, doesn’t any NHL playernhave a better twitter handle than Tkachuk? @TKACHUKycheese

Good bit of business for both sides there, I think. He's such a good fit in Calgary and they couldn't let it drag on any further.

And FWIW ... the RFA fireworks continue to fizzle. Aside from Laine, of course. He's bringing the drama even if nobody else is

Ron Francis has hired several pro scouts in anticipation of the 2021 expansion draft. Shockingly, he hired Ulf Samuelsson. He also hired Stu Barnes, Dave Hunter (who worked for the Canes?) and Cammi Granato, the first woman pro scout in the league.

Yeah ... the least known of the Hunter brothers worked for Carolina's scouting department for a long while. IIRC he was a pro scout for us, and based on our crappy returns on NHL trades during that time, wasn't an especially bright shining light. Still, even for the progressive folks up in Seattle, a last name goes a long way.

I'm glad to see Cammi Granato join an NHL scouting department. She's as sharp as they come and let's face it ... most mainstream scouting departments are filled up with has-been former players who don't actually know what they're doing. It's a low bar, but I'm sure she'll be fine.

Not a huge fan of THIS news, by the way. Matthews with some incredibly childish behavior that is in no way funny or inconsequential.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if this is a subconscious thing seeing as he was arguably up for captaincy this year. Now? I wouldn't give it to him. Sorry, but if you can't even behave civil with the opposite sex.... let alone the fact you are a professional athlete? Come on.
