2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

And then there were 2.

Laine re-signs with the Jets, 2 years/$13.5 million. Year 1 is $7 million, year 2 is $6.5 million.

A perfectly reasonable compromise contract. Now its up to Laine to go out and earn a big money long term deal.

Hmm ... seems way more reasonable than where they were heading a couple of weeks ago. Good for everyone, I guess.

The Av's look stacked, if I'm Rantanen, I'm not pulling a Willie Nylander and missing a portion of the season, that team has all the makings of being special, get the deal done and get going.

From what I've heard, Sakic is going fairly lowball on the kid. Screw that. Get paid.

Just saw a tweet that he and Laine are on the same plane headed from Finland to the US. So maybe there is some movement.
IMO there's absolutely no reason for Colorado not to give Rantanen what he's asking for other than they want to protect MacKinnon's stupidly cheap contract. Pay the kid his money and move on with life.

This. Is the issue with accepting a contract below market value. The opposite of one above. Except you introduce the issue on your team vs against other league players. Now they have to pay Ratanen more than MacKinnon. Being cheap won't pay off. Way to go Sakic

I've got a strong feeling that it's a bigger deal to Sakic than it is to MacKinnon.

Intriguing names hitting the waiver wire...Josh Ho-Sang and Thomas Hickey both placed on waivers by the Islanders, one time not too long ago, Ho-Sang was a top ranked prospect but never seemed to be willing to do the work it takes to be an NHL regular.

Former Checker Thomas Jurco has made the Oilers 23 man roster with a great camp.

Jurco was on their top line with McDavid for their last two pre season games ... if you can believe that.

Ho-Sang and Uncle Lou are about as bad a fit as you could find. Apparently the kid has turned into a bit of a headcase for them as well, which ain't helping. Hickey ... it was just a terrible contract when Snow extended him a few years ago. He's a mediocre defenseman on a $2.5 million cap hit. May as well be a sand bag at that price.

Josh Yohe who covers the Pens for The Athletic tweeted yesterday that Jack Johnson would likely be traded in the next 48 hours. That was 24 hours ago. He has 4 years left on a 5 year/$16.25 million deal he signed last year and has a $4 million actual this year. Rurtherford chased him for years and has buyers remorse in 14 months.
