2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Have some friends that work with the panthers. They work ‘upstairs’ and have some knowledge of the inner workings. Word is that Reich and his staff preferred Stroud over Young and Reich even said Young would be a career back-up and should not be their #1 pick. Tepper made the comment in a room full of staffers that There is no way he was drafting Stroud because he “looked like a thug”…which drew an audible gasp and grumble from many in the room. He then told them they were drafting Young and they would have to ‘deal with it’.

He is a clown
Tepper bough the Panthers in May 2018 and inherited Ron Rivera. They went 7-9 in 2018 and were 5-9 when Rivera was fired in December 2019. Interim coach Perry Fewell wasn’t retained. Matt Rhule was hired in January 2020. He was 10-23 in his 2 full seasons and was 1-4 when he was fired (walking away with a reported $40 million). Interim coach Steve Wilks went 6-6 but wasn’t retained. And now Reich gets whacked in his first season.

But wait, there’s more. Tepper is also the founding owner of MLS Charlotte FC. The team started play for the 2022 season. Miguel Ramirez was the first head coach and he lasted 14 matches. Christian Lattanzio was brought in as an interim coach and later extended through the 2024 season. He was fired on November 8.

So in 7 seasons as an owner (5 NFL, 2 MLS) across 2 different sports, Tepper has fired 7 coaches, including interim coaches. That’s a a sad, sad record.

Honestly ... stick with any of those interims and he's better off. Possible exception for Lattanzio, because the problem at Charlotte FC is more roster-related ... as in they just don't have much talent and have done a terrible job of player recruitment. At the NFL level though, I think he wants to be seen as the owner who brought in the "right coach" as opposed to the guy who stumbled on to a perfectly OK coach who just happened to be on staff.

For the record ... the press seems to act like it's a given that Tepper will use this time to do his due diligence on NFL HCs and Coordinators. Wanna bet he's either going to be tempted by yet another college guy or a washed up out of work coach so he can move more quickly? Because I'd like those odds, whatever they are.

He wants Ben Johnson. But problem is Ben Johnson turned him down last year and they settled for Reich. Now, every team looking for a coach next year wants Ben Johnson and the Carolina situation has only gotten worse since he rejected them last year. So, unless they throw some ridiculous, can’t be refused, type of money at him, they’ll end up getting another second/third tier option.

Also, who are Zoran Krneta and Scott Fitterer and why are their dignities, and potentially other body parts, in a jar in Tepper's office?

Good thing the Hornets (they're still the Hornets again, right?) are such a model of stability and can hold the standard high for Charlotte professional sport.

Tepper certainly is the poster boy for that old phrase about “more money than brains” but according to anyone who has ever worked with Tepper he’s the smartest guy in the room in his world. Greg Olson has now thrown his hat into the coaching search…

Ha. They could have an exceedingly annoying and arrogant head coach who would also suck as a coach! I love it.

It's just an illustration of how massive the gap is between being a sports fan and running a pro franchise. Tom Dundon gets heat for being so involved in the day to day with the Hurricanes, but that's from the outside. From the inside, the parts he's involved in are cost/benefit decisions and operations ... which is pretty close to what he does in his business life. Tepper is a great hedge fund manager which means he's got some ability to manage people, but I think his background is in investment analysis ... which is numbers driven, not people driven. A lot of new owners have to get the fanboy stuff out of the way before they settle down and trust the professionals they hire, but some of them never do ... and the ones that don't end up getting picketed by their fan bases.

This next hire and the process is probably going to be a huge sign as to how this is going to go for Tepper. If he clowns this one up too, then there's little hope that he's ever going to learn how to be a successful owner because he's simply refusing to learn from his mistakes.

My wish list in no particular order (since half of them will be VERY hard to get)

If they go offensive

Ben Johnson
Eric Bieniemy - he deserves a shot
Bobby Slowick/Brian Johnson - pickem

Defensive

Dan Quinn - a retread, but plays a style of defense I absolutely love, and I love defense. But, with a #1 QB that looks absolutely terrible, they'd be betteer off with one of the 3 listed above. They sunk way to much money and draft capital into Young to throw him to the wolves this early - even though I think he will never be the guy. Just another #1 QB to fail miserably in the league

Bring Steve Wilkes back, but too many feelings were hurt when he wasn't selected at the end of last year. I doubt he would leave SF to come back to that shit show.

What do I think they will do? Take the easy route and keep it internal and make another failed hiring of Jim Caldwell or one of the young coordinators Evero or Brown.

Eric Bienemy deserves a head coaching gig and that guy is millions a miles ahead of any imposter coach like Matt Rhule.

Poor guy is kryptonite to rich white owners though, for whatever reason. He's had a million interviews and couldn't have a better resume, really.

I'm never going to get over the fact that Tepper had Steve Wilks in hand and made him walk. I mean, who knows, maybe he wouldn't have been much better than Reich, but still, he had that team hustling last season.

He was 6-6. The last full season they were better than .500 was 2017.
