2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

After 10 years of swings and misses, and a .365 winning percentage since their last Super Bowl win in 2011, it looks like my New York Football Giants have finally hired a competent coach. It looks like John Harbaugh will be hired, maybe as soon as today. He spent all day yesterday with the team and cancelled a scheduled interview with Tennessee today.

I think Harbaugh is losing a little shine off his star the last few years. He has made a ton of questionable decisions the last 2-3 years from personnel to play calling. Hopefully for the Giants it was just time for a change and he will get back to what made him successful. I’m not a Giants fan but anything to shut up the Cowgirls talk. The team has been irrelevant for 30 years but we have to listen to espn and nfl network talk about them 24/7 like ‘THIS is the year’. Give me a good commanders and giants squad and put Philly and Dallas on the back burner. Yes please

Coughlin left after the 2015 season. Since then, the Giants are 55-101-1 for a .335 winning percentage, the 2nd worst record in the league ahead of the dog assed Jets. And that includes 2 playoff appearances, in 2016 and 2022. Other than those 2 seasons, they’ve lost at least 10 games each year. So yeah, after a diet of over matched head coaches like Joe Judge, Ben McAdoo and Brian Daboll, I’m ready for a real coach. It’s notable that none of their former coaches are coordinators anywhere. McAdoo is a defensive assistant for the Pats, Pat Shurmur is the QB coach at Colorado and Judge is the QB coach at Ole Miss. Daboll may get hired as an OC this cycle, he reportedly has several interviews lined up.

A low bar that they’ve been tripping over for almost 15 years now.
And that’s why I think they could and should do better. There are so many talented coordinators that would do wonders for that organization. I just think his best years are behind him and he won’t have Lamar Jackson in NY to cover for his mistakes. They need a culture change and to bring in a top young mind and build something long term. Not a 60 something retread. That’s just my opinion though.

They went with the young coordinators 3 times in their last 4 hires. McAdoo, Judge and Daboll all showed they weren’t ready for prime time.

Tells you that the problem is in the front office and their ability to spot real coaching talent. Some coaches are not meant to be the big dog. I didn’t say it was easy, but they have swung and missed way too many times and I think Harbaugh is just another swing and a miss. I mean, everyone’s gonna hail the higher because of John Harbaugh’s prior successes and I’m sure he’ll do better than his predecessors, but like I said that’s a low bar and i don’t think it sets them up long-term. Harbaugh did all that with a shit load of talent in Baltimore and New York just simply doesn’t have. But again, what do I know? I’m just some dip shit on a computer. Lol

Man, when you’ve done the coordinator thing for three straight hires and have missed all three times, then going with a guy who’s got a long track record, a career winning record, and a Super Bowl ring is a no brainer if you can pull it off. And Harbaugh has been through several roster rebuilds with the Ravens so you’re not just grabbing a guy who coasted to a good record on the back of a good QB or a hot coordinator or something. You might be over-thinking this one a bit. He’s unlikely to walk on water or anything, but I really doubt the Giants will remain a doormat under Harbaugh.

I think he’d be a great hire for them. He’s been very successful in Baltimore. Similar with Tomlinson in Pittsburgh.

I think a lot of the Ravens issue is with Lamar. He has a reputation as a superstar so people think Rodger’s or Manning or Brady level and he’s not that. He is or was very mobile but he’s not as much anymore which puts more emphasis on how he can beat you presnap and in the pocket. He’s not a superstar from there if you’re not having to be real worried about him taking off. Also they have a great running back but he has trouble with fumbling. Whoever hires Harbaugh is going to be much better going forward.

I’ll go area ahead and bookmark this thread lol
I mean, you’re not wrong about the disfunction of the front office. And it’s not the first time it’s happens with the Giants. Even before the Tisch family bought into the team, there were competing sides of the Mara family. Things got so bad in the late 70s, which was another period of deep suckitude, that Pete Rozelle stepped in. He couldn’t see one of the “flagship” franchises go down the tubes in the biggest media market. The cousins put their differences aside, hired George Young to be the GM, drafted Lawrence Taylor and became one of the dominant teams of the late 80s/early 90s. Are they going to make a Suoer Bowl run next year? No. But playing meaningful games in December is a good start. And .500 isn’t out of the question, that would mean more wins than the last 2 season combined.

My concern if I was a Giants fan is that Schoen is still there as GM and John Mara just seems kind of tired of the whole thing.

John Mara has cancer. His brother Chris has stepped up. The Mara family doesn’t really have any outside business, the Giants are it. So at some point will they cash out? Maybe. And while the Maras are most visible, the Tisch family owns half of the team. The Tisch family has other businesses, most notably Loews Corporation.

John Mara is also former Hurricane Patrick Brown’s uncle. His mother is John's sister. He’s cousins with actresses Kate and Rooney Mara, who are his Uncle Chris’ daughters.

Am I concerned about Schoen? Yep. But worst case scenario, if it doesn’t work, he only has 1 year left on his contract. So if he and Harbaugh clash, guess which one hits the street.

Are the Tisches even really involved? I’m not read up and I only ask because my interactions with the Loews group in the hospitality sector have always been very positive.

Steve Tisch is the chairman and executive vice president. It was his plane that ferried Harbaugh to and from Baltimore for the meetings. His brother Jonathan is the treasurer. So they’re really not involved in football decisions, that falls mostly to the Maras. But John Mara and both Tisches are in their 70s. The Giants sold a 10% stake to the Koch family in October with the Maras and Tisches reducing their holdings by 5% each and retaining operational control.
