2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

Something for tomorrow’s game…the Jackets put Elvis Merzlikens on IR. Korpisalo hasn’t played since January 31 and JF Berube has started their last 2 games, his first NHL action since 2018. He’s been backed up by Jet Greaves, who has split the season between the AHL and ECHL. The Jackets play in Florida tonight, so it will be interesting to see who plays.

Hmm ... I've never actually heard of Jet Greaves. That would be fun
No reason you would have, unless you follow Jackets minor leaguers. Hockeydb.com shows him in Barrie for 2 years, finishing in the 2019-20 season. He probably would have spent last year there too, but they cancelled the season.

I’m hoping the TDA situation is more of a week to week thing and not a long term injury that severely impacts the Canes D. If it’s a long term thing you have to think the Klingberg, Chycrun interest might become elevated.

I think Chycrun was already elevated. He hedges us for resigning TDA and/or Ethan Bear right? I guess unless they don’t think he is a good fit.

Following up on Jet Greaves, he was on a AHL contract, the Jackets signed him to an entry deal on February 20

I get it, but I don't like the idea of trading Morrow AND a 1st.
I’ll be surprised if we trade our 2023 first. But I never like what you have to give up. Except Rask for Nino. I pretty much was really great with that move.

I expect the decision comes down to if you think TDA is re-signable and part of future D plans. If not this becomes a move for the future. If so depending on the TDA $$ it still might.

TDA is an RFA, so that would help, but his stock won't ever be higher than it is now I would think. I don't want to go into the playoffs without a move at D if the goal is to win a cup this year.

Depends on what you think of Morrow as a long term prospect. Remember ... a year ago nobody would have rated him as anything other than a make-weight in this kind of deal. If Carolina moves him now, they're 100% selling high, and since they've been scouting him all this time I'm not sure why anyone would know the prospect better than the team that drafted him. If the Canes feel like he's peaked or is going to top out in the Hayden Fleury/Jake Bean kind of range ... it's an awfully good time to move him. In fact, better to do it now before our stupid fan base gets a crush on him.

Remember ... nobody's getting Chychrun on the cheap. He's signed to a perfectly reasonable deal with term left and the Coyotes are under no pressure to move the guy. If they get a good enough offer, sure ... but if not, so what? I feel only vaguely better about the guy than I did Skjei when we did that deal, but Chychrun is on a MUCH better contract.

Mark Lazarus, who covers the Blackhawks for The Athletic, says they’re down to 3 finalists for their GM job and Eric Tulsky isn’t on the list. Interim GM Kyle Davidson, Tampa Director of Operations Mathieu Darche and Chicago Cubs assistant GM Jeff Greenberg are the finalists, with Davidson being the front runner. Darche was also a finalist in Monteal and Vancouver. The article does say that Tulsky was “particularly impressive” and got serious consideration.

Yeah ... again, I figured Tulsky was a particularly bad fit for that job. I'm intrigued by the idea of a baseball guy running a hockey club though. Baseball has gotten very, very analytical since the old Moneyball days, and the Cubs were/are deeply committed to spending resources on number crunching. I don't know anything about Greenberg really, but his background is interesting, and I do think pro hockey is a sport that could benefit from some outside thinking and expertise.

But given the Blackhawks' normal MO, Davidson was always the guy and they've just been doing due diligence with these interviews. That's why they went to so much trouble broadcasting when they held interviews ... to show how much effort they put in proving that the interim guy that has never worked in another organization is the "right guy" for the job before doing what they were always gonna do from the beginning.

BTW, Tulsky is smart to put himself out there for open positions. That's the only way he's going to get a significant raise around here.

I think we can’t make that assumption. Dundon is willing st spend money where it impacts the product on the ice. Tulsky falls into that category. But I think it’s smart of him anyway. He should always be looking out for his own best interests. Anyone who thinks their employer is looking out for them is mistaken.

I think that’s why he got the Assistant GM title. He had been VP of Hockey Management and Strategy, but I think AGM is a league-defined role.
