Oh oh...someone just got busted and outed in the national media...If I was Dundon, I would dip into my billions and print that article out and Fedex several copies to every NHL official and send a whole box of those to Walkom, Bettman, Daly, etc...
 
NHL doesn't care. They will never care. Frustrating as it is, Canes need to keep playing through it because nothing is going to change.

They start caring when they start taking heat from the right kind of media. Sadly Travis Yost isn't up to that level, but if the right voices at ESPN, Turner and TSN started complaining about the same data then the league WOULD start feeling the heat a bit. Of course, that would require the people at those outlets who patently don't give a flying frick about small market US-based teams to notice that one of them is getting systematically screwed ... THAT's the really unlikely scenario here.
 
Last nights game was a perfect example. They gushed nonstop about every Tampa play and all of their players. The color person talked about Vasilesky like he’s Superman. When the Canes scored their first goal it was described as an unfortunate bounce. They have zero concern that the calls are one way favoring the big market or traditional market teams - or old school hockey - or whatever. It can’t be just penalty luck. If they called these games by the rule book there would be very few teams that would have a chance against this Canes team. But they let them hold, obstruct, punch, to the point that it evens things up to a large extent.
Then they have the gall to suggest the Canes don’t have the team toughness needed because we sent a guy with a fractured skull to fight Wilson when what they should have been doing was pointing out what a douche bag Wilson is and how the league needs to get that kind of garbage out of the gsme.

Yet when the players start suing the league because of negligent concussions etc. ESP fuckin N will be right there talking about how terrible the league was to let it go on.
 
Yeah ... that's not even the kind of media pressure I'm talking about. The in game people blather on about all sorts of nonsense and it doesn't move the needle even a little bit. But when the bigger name "experts" start to beat the drum, then the league has a history of reacting. For example, where is Gretzky's nearly useless self when a guy like Wilson goes on a rampage or the refs literally savage a more skilled team? He actually could do some good for once, in his current position. There are a handful of media people with actual influence, and almost none of them have anything to do with in game broadcasting.
 
For as much as I have loved the NHL for my entire life I am starting to see why this league is always plodding along under the current dinosaur leadership. The Black Hawks scandal earlier this year kinda was the spot light on how awful this league's leadership really is. Take the Department of Player Safety comedy show as exhibit B...how about buffoons' like Tom Wilson running around for the tenth or twelfth time doing the same shit things every night...the terrible officiating that continues to degrade by the year, it's a garage league in many aspects with the way it is run...great players, awesome game to enjoy, excellent markets, passionate fans, but the NHL leadership and the idiots at the top that seem to make most of the decisions are way past their shelf life and fresh leadership is needed along with fundamental change on several fronts.

With 11 of the last 15 against teams not currently in the playoffs, I hope we can do better than 8-6-1.

Top seed in the East would be nice. That’s never happened, we were the 2 seed in 2005-06

One presumes the context for this is the discussion on inequitable penalty calls, and in that light I'll point out that Cole retired in 2015. It seems unlikely that his reputation is still harming the Canes' case with the refs after 7 years. I'd also point out that no current Hurricanes player has anything like a rep as a diver. Svech gets unfairly treated like some sort of headhunter, but otherwise Carolina's issue is pretty clearly not one of player reputation. Unless you stretch that to indicate that Carolina's "star players" don't get the star treatment from the refs... in which case, you'd be onto something.

Oh, I'm not complaining about the shot. I've seen the clips, and the kid can flat out fire the puck. It's just that this team is mostly built on the forecheck and I've never seen anything to indicate that Gunler has even the vaguest interest in doing that work. We'll see how it goes, but I do think it's important to get him playing North American hockey at this point.
